  • Patent number: 8244855
Abstract: An application state aware mediating server or proxy. In general, the mediating server includes a packet inspection engine, a state inspector, and optionally a state classifier. The packet inspection engine examines packets passing through the mediating server to identify packets satisfying packet identification criteria of the state inspector. The identified packets are provided to the state inspector. Based on one or more of the identified packets, the state inspector determines an application state, or partial application state, for the application. Optionally, the state classifier may map the application state into one of a number of predefined state classifications.

  • Patent number: 8242948
Abstract: Methods and systems for generating a raster file in a raster file format for use in a Digital Radar Landmass Simulator (DRLMS). A file in the raster file format defines synthetic aperture radar (SAR) scenery for use in generating a runtime database. The raster file contains a plurality of texture elements (texels) that define the SAR scenery. Each texel may have a material identifier, which identifies a material composition of a respective surface region of the SAR scenery; a surface height identifier, which identifies a surface height with respect to a bare earth elevation (BEE) value of the respective surface region; and a BEE identifier, which identifies a BEE of the respective surface region. A method for determining surface height identifiers based on digital surface model (DSM) elevation data is also provided.

  • Patent number: 8244876
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided to allow telephony or other types of media communications and services to be provided for a device (24) having a private network address that resides behind a firewall and network address and port translation (NAPT) module (which is not aware of the underlying protocol for the communications and services). Examples of the underlying protocol includes the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Real-Time Protocol (RTP). A path through the firewall and NAPT module is defined by use of keep-alive messages communicated through the firewall and NAPT module. Addresses that are allocated by the firewall and NAPT module are associated with the device (24) for both signaling and media communications. A feature of the firewall that enables the provision of telephony and media communications through the firewall that is protocol-unaware is that the firewall allows responses to messages initiated by the device back through the firewall.

  • Patent number: 8245046
Abstract: To help ensure that only authorized media content that is associated with rights management (RM) restrictions is delivered from a compliant RM interface of a source device to a non-compliant RM interface of a destination device, an interconnect device provides a compliant RM interface to connect to the source device and monitors media content received from the source device to detect an embedded digital watermark. The interconnect device takes the necessary steps to determine if the watermark is authentic and control delivery of the media content to the destination device accordingly. The interconnect device may go back to the source device or to a remote service to authenticate the watermark. If the watermark is authentic, the media content is passed by the interconnect device to the non-compliant interface of the destination device outside of normal RM restrictions. Otherwise, the delivery of the media content is restricted by the interconnect device.

  • Patent number: 8238245
Abstract: A method is provided of planning routes and allocating route identifiers in a managed frame-forwarding network. The network comprises a plurality of nodes interconnected by links, with each node being arranged to forward data frames according to a combination of an identifier and a network address carried by a received data frame and forwarding instructions stored at the node. A first step of the method identifies a sub-set of nodes which are core nodes of the network. The remaining nodes are termed outlying nodes. A spanning tree is then built off each of the identified core nodes, with the spanning tree stopping one link short of any other core node. Each spanning tree defines a loop-free path between a core node at the root of the spanning tree and a set of outlying nodes. Connections are planned between roots of the spanning trees and a different identifier is allocated to each planned connection between a pair of spanning trees.

  • Patent number: 8239580
Abstract: In a Local Area Network (LAN) system, an Ethernet adapter exchanges data with a host through programmed I/O (PIO) and FIFO buffers. The receive PIO employs a DMA ring buffer backup so incoming packets can be copied directly into host memory when the PIO FIFO buffer is full. The adapter may be programmed to generate early receive interrupts when only a portion of a packet has been received from the network, so as to decrease latency. The adapter may also be programmed to generate a second early interrupt so that the copying of a large packet to the host may overlap reception of the packet end. The adapter to begin packet transmission before the packet is completely transferred from the host to the adapter, which further reduces latency.

  • Patent number: 8233591
Abstract: The present invention provides a technique for providing a forced hold service such as is used for an emergency services call, which is supported at least in part over a packet network. The forced hold service acts to effectively hold a connection for the call with a called party, even when the caller takes an action that would normally end a call, such as going on hook, pressing end, or the like. When the caller takes an action that would normally end the call, the forced hold service allows the caller to automatically reconnect to the emergency services provider over the held connection upon going offhook, pressing send, or the like. Alternatively, the emergency services provider can effectively re-engage the call wherein the caller is reconnected over the held connection upon going offhook, pressing send, or the like.

  • Patent number: 8233384
Abstract: The present invention provides a redundancy mechanism for packet-based communication environments without requiring localized redundancy of session control entities. These session control entities are generally referred to as service nodes, which may act as proxies on behalf of the communication terminals being served. Instead of having a dedicated backup service node, other active service nodes, which primarily serve different groups of communication terminals, are configured to provide backup support when another service node fails. In operation, a communication terminal will periodically attempt to communicate with its primary service node. When the communication terminal detects that the attempts to communicate with the service node are unsuccessful, the communication terminal will attempt to register with a selected alternate service node, the alternate service node being a currently active service node primarily supporting another group of communication terminals.

  • Patent number: 8229454
Abstract: The present invention provides for delivering location information to any number of subscribers via their respective location applications, which may run on any type of communication device. The location is derived from state information received from one or more devices with which the user interacts or a system associated therewith. The state information is processed to create the location information, which is provided to the location applications of the subscribers. The system may allow the user to establish a profile, which defines to whom and how location information is disseminated. The profile may specify those who can receive location information, those who cannot receive location information, and those who should always get the location information even if others are restricted by time, date, location, or other criteria specified by the user. Further, certain subscribers may receive a preset location, regardless of the received state information.

  • Patent number: 8229441
Abstract: The signals from adjacent transmitters reinforce one another. As a result of this over-the-air combining, signal quality is improved in the network and especially at or near cell boundaries. The present invention provides a graduated single frequency network (GSFN) wherein transmitters in cells throughout a geographic area cooperate to broadcast data to user terminals throughout the geographic area, and adjacent transmitters transmit signals that substantially reinforce one another. When transmitting the data, transmitters in certain adjacent cells throughout the geographic area may employ slightly different transmit parameters to provide slightly different transmission signals. The transmission signals used to transmit the data may be varied in a graduated fashion throughout the geographic area, wherein even when there is a difference in the transmission signals of transmitters in adjacent cells, the transmission signals reinforce one another despite being different.

  • Patent number: 8224856
Abstract: A system and method are provided for intelligently, or programmatically, assigning weights for one or more criterion utilized to score media content items based on an analysis of a group of media content items. In general, scoring criteria to be used to score media content items for a user are defined. A group of media content items associated with the user is then analyzed with respect to the criteria to provide results such as a number or percentage of media content items from the group of media content items that satisfy each of the scoring criteria. Based on the results of the analysis, a weight is assigned to each of the scoring criteria. Thereafter, media content items are scored for the user as a function of the weights assigned to the scoring criteria.

  • Patent number: 8224946
Abstract: Each access node is associated with one or more IP subnets with a preferred default subnet. Each subnet is instantiated as a unique virtual Ethernet broadcast domain. As client nodes register on the communication network, they will dynamically try to obtain an IP address for use on the communication network. As part of this process, the MAC address of the client node will be checked to ensure that it is not a duplicate of another MAC address associated with another client node that has already been assigned an IP address from the default subnet. When duplicate MAC addresses are detected, the device with the duplicate MAC address will be assigned an IP address from a different subnet so that more than one client device with the same MAC address are not associated with the same subnet. In one embodiment, a DHCP server may implement the process of checking for duplicate MAC addresses.

  • Patent number: 8223792
Abstract: A low cost mechanism that may be used to extend Ethernet capability to low end devices provides sufficient capacity to support Ethernet communications using only a single twisted pair medium. Because only a single twisted pair is used, the overall cost, complexity and size associated with the integrating Ethernet functionality into an end device is reduced. A distributed power system delivers power to a Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) device over the single twisted pair medium. With such an arrangement, Ethernet capability and power may be simultaneously delivered to low end devices at a reduced cost.
