  • Patent number: 6594111
Abstract: A spindle motor for use in a disk drive has a spindle motor hub having an axis of rotation, an annular magnet element coupled to the spindle motor hub, and a spindle motor stator. The spindle motor stator has a stator rim formed of a plurality of adjacent arc segments. The arc segments each respectively has opposing curved ends extending parallel to the axis of rotation. The curved ends of respective adjacent arc segments cooperatively form a plurality of stator teeth in operable communication with the magnet element for rotating the spindle motor hub. The spindle motor stator has a plurality of windings distributed along the stator rim. The windings each have a winding axis parallel to the axis of rotation and being disposed about respective ones of the stator teeth.

  • Patent number: 6571460
Abstract: An aspect of the invention can be regarded as a method of balancing a rotary actuator for use in a rotatable head stack assembly (HSA) portion in a disk drive. The rotary actuator has a pivot axis, and the rotatable HSA portion has an installed HSA portion center-of-gravity. The method provides for determining a desired rotary actuator center-of-gravity location for locating the installed HSA portion center-of-gravity along the pivot axis for mitigating acceleration of the rotary actuator about the pivot axis due to external linear acceleration experienced by the disk drive during a track-follow operation. The method further provides for measuring weight distribution characteristics of the rotary actuator to determine an actual rotary actuator center-of-gravity. The method further provides for selectively modifying weight distribution characteristics of the rotary actuator to locate the actual rotary actuator center-of-gravity at the desired rotary actuator center-of-gravity location.

  • Patent number: 6574073
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a base, a disk, an actuator arm comprising a tang attached to a base end of the actuator arm, a head attached to a distal end of the actuator arm, a voice coil motor for rotating the actuator arm about a pivot to position the head radially over the disk, and a crash stop comprising injection molded plastic formed into a body piece having a protruding first arm and a protruding second arm. The body piece of the crash stop is attached to the base of the disk drive. The first protruding arm comprises a magnet at least partially embedded into the plastic for latching the tang of the actuator arm to the first protruding arm. The plastic is formed around the magnet such that at least part of the plastic is between the magnet and the tang. The second protruding arm presents a physical barrier to the tang to limit the stroke of the actuator arm.

  • Patent number: 6421208
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed including a disk, an actuator arm including a head, and a voice coil motor for actuating the actuator arm to position the head radially over the disk. The voice coil motor includes a voice coil portion including a first side and a second side opposite the first side for conducting a current. The current conducted by the first side generates a first side magnetic flux in a first direction, and the current conducted by the second side generates a second side magnetic flux in a second direction different from the first direction. The voice coil motor further includes a rotary voice coil yoke including a first magnet for generating a unidirectional magnetic flux, and a magnetic flux conductor shaped to form an air gap with respect to the first magnet, the magnetic flux conductor for guiding the unidirectional magnetic flux through the air gap.

  • Patent number: 6304439
Abstract: A removable storage system includes a disk drive sled assembly for supporting a disk drive and for insertion and removal of the disk drive from a mating bay assembly. The bay assembly includes a pivotable cam assembly that includes a pair of cam legs configured to pivot about a cam rotation axis when a cam grip member is rotated. The sled assembly includes a conductive support frame. The disk drive is disposed in the conductive support frame and is attached to respective inner surfaces of the sled floor wall and the sled ceiling wall. A pair of rails is fastened to respective outer surfaces of the sled floor wall and the sled ceiling wall for supporting the sled assembly in corresponding channels disposed in the bay assembly. A is bezel attached to the sled end wall and includes a handle member for manually gripping the sled assembly. A trough having a first and a second surface is formed in the bezel.

  • Patent number: 6292333
Abstract: Disk spacers in multiple disk drives are shaped to provide a reliable mechanism for loading and unloading magnetic recording heads and a reliable latch when the heads are unloaded. The head load/unload system operates between a stack of latch-profiled spacer ramps sandwiching magnetic hard disks and a stack of lifting arms with contoured tips attached to head/suspension assemblies. The lifting arms and their contoured tips are built as part of the one-piece of the suspension load beams at their inner diameter side perpendicular to the load beam axis, or at their front along the axis. The spacer ramps are precisely machined to a latch profile with a desired rounded edge merging with the disk surface, an inclined slope, a round hump and a rounded recess, so that the contoured tip of a lifting arm can slide onto the slope first, over the hump and then into the recess where the tip is latched.
