  • Patent number: 5012145
Abstract: The high cost of fabricating a rotating rectifier assembly may be reduced in a construction including first and second tubular, generally cylindrical housing sections (12), (14), of insulating material in end to end abutment. Each of the sections (12), (14), has an interior wall (28), (40) including an elongated, inverted T-shaped slot (60) with the slot (60) in one of the sections (12) being circumferentially spaced from the slot (60) and the other of the sections (14) by about 180 degrees. Elongated buses (70) are located in the widest part of each of the slots (60) and each includes plural packaged diode mounting apertures (72). Packaged diodes 74 have combination terminal/mounting posts (76) located in a corresponding aperture (72) and further include an opposite terminal (80) extending to the interior wall (28), (40) opposite the corresponding slot (60). Fasteners (78) within the slots (60) secure the combination terminal/mounting posts (76) to the corresponding bus (70) in electrical contact therewith.

  • Patent number: 5010127
Abstract: The problems associated with patching, sealing and forming ice due to water run off and large imperfections on skating rinks is solved by the use of an additive for treating water which comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of water gelling starches and polymers of acrylic acid and sodium salt commonly referred to as super absorbent polymers and means for dispersing the polymer in water. The polymer absorbs water, which may be tap water at a temperature in the range of 45.degree.-55.degree. F., producing a generally homogenous mixture with slush-like consistence, when mixed with the water. The mixture may then by applied where patching, sealing or the formation of ice is required. The frozen mixture formed has desirable characteristics for skating. The invention also encompasses novel methods for patching, sealing and forming ice.

  • Patent number: 5007178
Abstract: A measuring tape device which includes a casing having an aperture through which a coilable measuring tape can be extracted and retracted. A coilable measuring tape is disposed in the casing with a distal end projecting from the aperture. A first brake mechanism is mounted on the casing for normally applying a controlled drag on the tape which allows the tape to be extracted or retracted against the drag to any given length and held at that length. A second brake mechanism is mounted on the casing and is selectively operable for applying a positive lock on the tape greater in magnitude than the drag of the first brake mechanism, to prevent accidental extraction or retraction of the tape.

  • Patent number: 5006768
Abstract: The problem of efficiently starting a motor (16) which is used to start an engine (12) during engine start is solved with a motor control unit (30) which includes a resolver (34) having a primary winding (34P) coupled to an oscillator (36). The resolver (34) includes two single-phase secondary windings (34S1, 34S2) which are placed in space-quadrature to each other and which develop signals proportional to the sine and cosine of the angular position of the rotor for the motor (16). The sine wave and the cosine wave are transferred to a phase conversion circuit (46) which develops three sinusoidal signals 120.degree. out of phase with respect to each other. Each of the three developed sinusoidal signals is supplied to a respective multiplier circuit (51-53) which also receives a current command. The output of each multiplier (51-53) is a sinusoidal current command signal.

  • Patent number: 5004961
Abstract: A control for a window operator is operable to control incremental movement of a window. The control includes means for developing a command to selectively move the window in a direction to an open or closed position, and means for determining when a plurality of motor drives have moved the window a preselected incremental distance. • Patent number: 5003767
Abstract: A power augmented gas turbine starter system which has a starter including a casing rotatably mounting a turbine wheel therewithin. A low pressure air supply communicates with the casing. A combustor is associated with the low pressure air supply for receiving air therefrom and supplying a flow of hot gas to the starter for augmenting the power of the starter. The air supply may be a bleed air conduit from an auxiliary power unit or from a main propulsion engine, and the combustor may be removably mounted directly in-line within the air supply conduit. The invention contemplates the use of a single auxiliary power unit and a single combustor for supplying a flow of hot gas to two or more gas turbine starters associated with their respective main propulsion engines. A cross-bleed circuit may be provided so that cross-bleed from one main engine can be used to start another main engine by providing bleed air for the other engine's gas turbine starter.

  • Patent number: 5001987
Abstract: A lightweight car-on-track system having a pair of spaced-apart rails and an associated rotatable drive tube with a captive carrier movable along the rails and having a drive wheel in driving engagement with the rotatable drive tube. The drive wheel is spring-loaded against the rotatable drive tube and the capture of the carrier to the rails results in a controlled drive force achieved regardless of the weight of the carrier or of a load supported thereon. The system is made up of a selected number of modular units, each having adjustably mounted frame members supporting opposite ends of a rail section and a drive tube section. Adjustable mounting of frame members to an alignment plate assures alignment between rail and drive tube sections when assembling the system. A transfer device is utilized for transferring a carrier from the end of one track section to the spaced-apart end of another track section with the transfer device being oscillatable about a pivot axis.
