  • Patent number: 6525334
Abstract: An abrasive particle detention system includes a fluid circulation system, a probe assembly, a monitoring circuit, and an operator indicator. The probe assembly includes an orifice from which a stream of fluid emerges, and a probe having a face upon which the stream at least partially impinges. The probe face includes an insulative substrate and a conductive film formed on the substrate. Abrasive particles in the fluid stream abrade the conductive film, changing its electrical resistance. A monitoring circuit is utilized to observe these changes, and when they correspondence to a concentration above a pre-selected level, an operation indicator is triggered. The system may include an electronic controller coupled to the monitoring circuit, which can account for variables such as temperature, viscosity, and/or pressure in the fluid circulation system.

  • Patent number: 6521067
Abstract: This invention relates to an apparatus and method for joining fabric, particularly for joining separate pieces of layered fabric, by means of waterproof seam in a single operation. The seam bonding apparatus comprises a hot-melt adhesive supply (20), a transducer (24) which supplies ultrasonic energy and a sonotrode (23) which directs the ultrasonic energy to an application point on the seam to be bonded. Adhesive, preferably molten nylon, is fed through a passage (25) in the sonotrode (23) via an exit aperture (28) at the end of the sonotrode to the application point. Local heat is applied to the other side of the seam at the application point, and the seam is then subjected to local cooling to form a permanent waterproof seam.

  • Patent number: 6516940
Abstract: A conveyor (20, 120, 220, 320) for transporting objects sensitive to electrostatic discharge. In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a slippable roller conveyor (20, 120, 220, 320) with conductive slippable rollers (30, 30′) in electrical communication with an electrical ground (60). The slippable rollers (30, 30′) preferably have about 105 ohms resistance from the outer surface (40) to the inner diameter (34) to ensure that electrostatic charges built up on the conveyed object can flow to ground, yet not flow too quickly. In another embodiment, the roller shafts (35) are supported on highly conductive bushings that provide a path to electrical ground that is preferably less than 104 ohms. In yet another embodiment, the roller shafts (35) are driven by a conductive pulley (65) that minimizes the build-up of electrostatic charge as a result of a triboelectric effect with the drive belt (70).

  • Patent number: 6510780
Abstract: A reversibly actuatable fluid hydraulic pump is described for use in a hydraulically driven elevator. The pump comprises a cylinder and a piston linearly actuatable within the cylinder by a ball screw race disposed over a spindle and connected to the piston. The shaft of the piston is hollow to receive the spindle as the piston is drawn along by virtue of the motion of the race along the spindle, and seals are provided at the free end of the piston which sealingly engage against the walls of the cylinder, and on the cylinder which sealingly engage with the shaft of the piston. A further feature of the invention is the provision of a compressible gas between the end of the cylinder and the end of the piston so that the expansion thereof reduces the work required to move the piston out of the cylinder, whereas when the system is relaxing, the compressible gas provides extra resistance and thus a smoother motion.

  • Patent number: 6506170
Abstract: A mitt is made from three sheets of thin fabric arranged with first and second sheets stitched together along their edges so that facing surfaces of the two sheets slide readily over each other. A third sheet is fastened to at least one of the first two sheets, providing an opening whereby the third sheet and the second sheet form a hand-receiver pocket. Means are provided around the opening to assist in keeping the mitt on the hand after the hand is received in the pocket. The second (middle) sheet is movable-relative to the first sheet, with the facing surfaces of these two sheets readily slidable relative to each other. The other surfaces of the sheets have surfaces of a nature more inclined to stay in place on the skin of the body portion being examined and on the fingers of the examiner while moving the second sheet relative to the first sheet and looking for lumps or irregularities below the surface of the skin of the body portion being examined.

  • Patent number: 6505488
Abstract: A tire lock mounts to an opening in the vehicle frame in order to suspend a locking bar down through an opening in the spare wheel. A locking device may then be slid over the distal end of the locking bar in order to lock the spare wheel securely in place. The locking device is designed to accept a lock cylinder from the manufacturer's easily-defeated spare tire lock, so that the locking device of the present invention may be keyed with the remaining locks of the vehicle. The locking mechanism of the present invention also incorporates a spring-loaded resilient boot which engages the vehicle spare wheel lug nut hole, thereby preventing annoying rattling between the spare tire lock of the present invention and the spare tire.
