  • Patent number: 5420639
Abstract: Methods for compressing data in a system employing vector quantization (VQ) and Huffman coding comprise: First, quantizing an input vector by representing the input vector with a VQ codevector selected from a VQ codebook partitioned into subsets, wherein each subset comprises codevectors and each codevector is stored at a corresponding address in the VQ codebook. Next, generating a rate dependent Huffman codeword for the selected codevector, wherein the rate dependent Huffman codeword identifies the subset of the VQ codebook in which the selected codevector is stored. And finally, generating a substantially rate independent Huffman codeword for the selected codevector, wherein the substantially rate independent Huffman codeword identifies a particular VQ codevector within the subset identified by the rate dependent Huffman codeword.

  • Patent number: 5376012
Abstract: A power port terminal formed by stamping from a blank of conductive material comprises a contact receiving socket portion and an integral mounting portion. The socket includes a web with a plurality of beams thereon. Each of the beams has a curved surface with a bend therein. The inner surface of the beams on the bends thereof define a substantially continuous cylindrical contact surface at a predetermined point along the reference axis of the terminal. The contact surface has a predetermined constricted dimension measured in a plane perpendicular to the reference axis, this dimension being the most constricted dimension along the reference axis of the terminal. The terminal is thereby able to accommodate a pin of any desired axial length. The trailing mounting portion has a set of mounting legs thereon that, the preferred instance, extend generally perpendicular to the reference axis of the terminal. Latch tabs may be provided one or more of the beams.

  • Patent number: 5341425
Abstract: In a data transmission system comprising a plurality N of transmission sites and at least one reception site, a set of data at each transmission site is uniquely encrypted by (a) providing each transmission site with a broadcast key unique to that transmission site and a system key that is the same for all transmission sites, the system key comprising a plurality S of bits and each of the broadcast keys comprising a unique plurality B of bits, wherein B is less than S; (b) convolving in a predetermined manner at each transmission site the system key and the broadcast key unique to that transmission site to generate a unique data encryption key for that transmission site; (c) encrypting the set of data at each transmission site with the unique data encryption key generated at that site. The sets of data uniquely encrypted at each transmission site are then transmitted to the reception site.

  • Patent number: 5247934
Abstract: Methods are provided for detecting and diagnosing osteoporosis using high-resolution NMR imaging of trabecular bone. One such method comprises the steps of obtaining high-resolution NMR imaging data indicative of the trabecular microstructure of a mass of bone, analyzing the imaging data to determine the density of the trabeculae of the bone, comparing the density thus obtained with reference trabecular density data, and determining on the basis of the comparison whether the subject is osteoporotic or normal. To determine trabecular density, bone volume can be computed as the area fraction of those pixels that by virtue of their characteristic pixel intensity can be assigned to bone. Trabecular thickness can be computed from the relative bone area in a region of interest divided by half the perimeter length, the perimeter length being the circumference of all bone islands observed in the region of interest.

  • Patent number: 5155638
Abstract: A compatible disk drive is disclosed which is capable of writing and reading data on either of first, second and third interchangeable flexible magnetic disk cartridges of different storage capacities at first, second and third prescribed data transfer rates, respectively. The first and second disk cartridges have a first and a second capacity discriminate window, respectively, formed in different prescribed positions in their housings by way of contradistinction from each other and from the third disk cartridge which has no capacity discriminate window. The disk drive customarily employs two disk sensors for discriminating among the first, second and third disk cartridges. The invention ultilizes the binary outputs from the two disk sensors for the detection of the loading of any of the three types of disk cartridges, thereby dispensing with an additional sensor heretofore employed for that purpose.

  • Patent number: 4811132
Abstract: An early end of tape sensing subsystem for a data processing system, including a host computer, a cache buffer, and a magnetic tape drive subsystem utilizes outputs dependent upon the movement of a capstan wheel, swing arm, and file reel of the magnetic tape drive subsystem, determining the net movement of tape therein in order to measure the circumference of the file reel plus tape thereon. Whenever a series of valid readings from a conventional sensor are obtained indicating that the circumference of the file reel plus tape is approaching that of the circumference of the file reel itself (i.e., no tape on the file reel), a signal is sent to the microprocessor controlling the cache buffer, said signal indicating that the end of the tape is approaching.

  • Patent number: 4769818
Abstract: A method of, and apparatus for, encoding and decoding a sequence of data bytes to permit correction of bit errors occurring in one byte of the sequence, or two bytes providing that the two incorrect bytes can be identified (for example if the bytes show parity failure). Each data byte of the sequence comprises data bits and one parity check bit. To encode the sequence of data bytes two "Code C" code bytes are determined from the data bytes, according to predetermined relationships, the data bytes and code bytes together forming an encoded data block. Also, there is provided a method of, and apparatus for, encoding and decoding a bundle of data blocks to permit correction of a number of bit errors occurring in bytes of the bundle. (Conceptually, the bundle of data blocks comprises a stack of data blocks, one positioned under another to form a two dimensional array of bytes.) Data block bundle encoding consists of separately encoding rows (i.e. horizontal encoding) and columns or pairs of columns (i.e.

  • Patent number: 4473905
Abstract: The present invention provides a completely self-contained intraoral larynx comprising a power source, tongue activated controls, power saving signal generation circuitry, acoustic and audio amplifiers, and an intra-oral speaker. These components are contained within an otherwise conventional denture or dental prosthesis. The device produces a high amplitude sound while minimizing current drain from the power source. Laryngectomized patients require only short term training by a speech pathologist to use this device. Intelligible speech is usual within an hour of such training, and facility rapidly improves. The psychological barriers, post-operative physical limitations, aesthetic concerns and limited gestural communication traditionally associated with the use of extra-oral larynges is eliminated by the present invention.
