  • Patent number: 7728577
Abstract: Techniques pertaining to device and method for controlling an analog signal are disclosed. Using a single connection (e.g., a connector or a pin) without an external resistive element (e.g., a resistor), an analog output is digitally controlled and produced. In one embodiment, a precisely controlled current is generated from coded data. A control unit is designed to control a working mode based on an input signal from the connection. The working mode includes a default mode, a programmable mode, a testing mode and a shutdown mode. Under the programmable mode, a user determines a signal coupled in from the connection as desired, and a code unit codes the signal in accordance with a predefined protocol. The code unit then sends the coded data to a decode unit. The decode unit is designed to generate or control the current by the decoded data.

  • Patent number: 7728947
Abstract: A nano-liquid crystal on silicon (nano-LCoS) chip having carbon nanotube (CNT) pillars that are grown on a glass substrate thereof. As the heights of the CNT pillars are uniform, the CNT pillars can function as spacers providing a uniform cell gap between the glass substrate and a silicon chip of the nano-LCoS chip. Also, being excellent electrical conductors, CNT pillars can form a part of the electrical connection between an outside voltage source and the indium tin oxide (ITO) layer formed on the glass substrate. The nano-LCoS chip includes nano-LCoS alignment keys that are formed in the silicon chip and connected to the CNT pillars. By applying the same voltage to the ITO layer and keys, a portion of the liquid crystal activated by the keys become transparent fiduciary marks for optical alignment of nano-LCoS chips.

  • Patent number: 7694643
Abstract: Sandwiched structures for an optical disc, especially for Blu-ray discs, are disclosed. According to one exemplary structure, a substrate is sandwiched by two cover layers on both sides of a disc As a result, similar characteristics in material on both sides of the disc help sustain the shape and flatness of the disc. To provide the cover layers in uniform thickness, techniques for creating or producing such a cover layer are described. In one embodiment, a certain amount of the material in liquid form is dispensed onto a dispensing structure. After the dispensing structure is engaged to hold a disc, the dispensing structure and the disc as a whole unit is rotated at a predefined speed.

  • Patent number: 7685331
Abstract: A direct memory access controller (DMAC) is disclosed. In one case, the DMAC is configured to manage a DMA transmission of mass data with non-continuous addresses with a nonvolatile memory. The DMAC has to transmit them in batches according to their respective continuous addresses but, different from the prior art systems, does not interrupt a CPU for each batch of the DMA transmissions. In a DMA transmission between a functional device and the nonvolatile memory, a central processor configures a link-list of cluster addresses, which is obtained from a FAT (i.e., a file allocated table) in the nonvolatile memory and may be non-continuous, in a logic address buffer. Then, a divide unit provided in the DMAC divides a non-continuous link-list of cluster addresses from the logic address buffer into a plurality of continuous sub-link-list of cluster addresses, thus the DMAC can configure each batch of DMA transmission according to the continuous sub-link-list of cluster addresses without causing impact on the CPU.

  • Patent number: 7681145
Abstract: An improved user interface for data input without the use of a standard keyboard is provided. Input is accepted through a data entry means such as a shuttle control system, a standard telephone keypad, or a speech recognition system. The data that is entered is selected from a predefined list that is presented to a user in an arrangement that statistically reduces the number of keystrokes required for data entry. This presentation is the result of determining the relative frequency of each valid selection in the predefined list and presenting those valid selections with the highest frequency items in a position that minimizes the number keystrokes required for data entry. In a speech recognition embodiment, the data entered is selected from an active list containing unique sounding entries. Alternatively, the data entered may be selected by speaking the numbers associated with the keys corresponding to the keystrokes required for data entry.

  • Patent number: 7672554
Abstract: New designs of optical devices, particularly for multiplexing or demultiplexing as well as adding or dropping are disclosed. According to one aspect of the designs, one or more beam redirecting parts (e.g., prisms or mirrors) are used in an optical device to redirect a beam for at least two purposes: to increase a distance between two optical parts that are not positioned along an optical path, by using one or two of such beam redirecting parts, and to minimize an angle of incidence (AOI) to an optical filter or to adjust the AOI to an optimum value. As a result, devices employing the techniques provide small AOL and flexibility in adjustment and are amenable to small footprint, broad operating wavelength range, enhanced impact performance, lower cost, and easier manufacturing process.

  • Patent number: 7670833
Abstract: This invention presents the high throughput (HT) analysis technology for molecular fractions employing micro-array format. Molecules are fractionated according to the properties of molecules and are assigned primary designated orders while their tissue origins are assigned secondary designated orders such that each fractionated molecules become addressable and traceable. Fractionated molecules are recovered, arrayed, and analyzed according to the same primary designated orders and secondary designated order in a high throughput manner. The above properties of molecules can be measured and predicted.

  • Patent number: 7619446
Abstract: Techniques pertaining to a comparator circuit with reduced power consumption are disclosed. According to one aspect of the present invention, the comparator unit has a pair of input signal pins VIP and VIN, a pair of output signal pins VOR and VOS, and a clock signal pin CLK. In operation, when the CLK signal is at an idle voltage level, the comparator unit comes into an idle state. At the idle state, the comparator unit does not compare the two input signals VIP and VIN so that the output signals are identical. When the CLK signal is at a busy voltage level, the comparator comes into a busy state. At the busy state, the comparator compares the input signals VIP and VIN, and determines the values of the output signals VOR and VOS depending on the comparing result, e.g., if the input signal VIP is larger than the input signal VIN, the output signal VOR is high and the output signal VOS is low; otherwise, the output signal VOR is low and the output signal VOS is high.
