Patent number: 11278222Abstract: Waterless electrochemical transdermal alcohol sensor. In one embodiment, the sensor includes a proton exchange membrane imbibed with an imbibing liquid that includes at least one cationic substance that is liquid at room temperature. As examples, the cationic substance may be one or more ionic liquids with an imidazolium, phosphonium, ammonium, pyridinium, pyrrolidinium, or sulfonium backbone structure. The imbibing of the proton exchange membrane with the cationic substance obviates the need for the periodic addition of water to the electrochemical cell. The sensor additionally includes a sensing electrode, which is bonded to one side of the proton exchange membrane, and a counter electrode and a reference electrode, both of which are bonded to the opposite side of the proton exchange membrane. The sensor may be incorporated into a wearable transdermal alcohol sensor device, which, in turn, may be incorporated into a system for detecting transdermal alcohol.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2018Date of Patent: March 22, 2022Assignee: 1A SMART START LLCInventors: Michael Moeller, Brian Rasimick

Patent number: 10458975Abstract: An interlock data collection and calibration system has a device computer, and a gas sample delivery system for delivering a first gas sample and a second gas sample to the ignition interlock device, the first and second gas samples having different predetermined concentrations of alcohol. The device computer includes a calibration program for calibrating the ignition interlock device using the first gas sample, and then delivering the second gas sample to the ignition interlock device to verify that the ignition interlock device correctly determines the second alcohol concentration of the second sample gas.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2015Date of Patent: October 29, 2019Assignee: 1A Smart Start, LLCInventor: Michael Lyon

Patent number: 9481245Abstract: A vehicle sobriety interlock system including a sobriety testing apparatus for testing a driver of a vehicle for intoxication and an interlock system responsive to test results from the sobriety testing apparatus for controlling ignition of an engine of the vehicle. The interlock system, in response to a test result indicating that the driver is sober, allows the driver to start the engine of the vehicle. During a vehicle warm-up time period of a predetermined length following start of the engine and before a transmission of the vehicle has been engaged for putting the vehicle in motion, the interlock system delays a retest of the driver with the sobriety testing system for intoxication.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 2015Date of Patent: November 1, 2016Assignee: 1A Smart Start LLCInventor: Aaron Theodore Nelson

Patent number: 9442103Abstract: A method for preventing circumvention of a intoxication test includes defining a detection time envelope with a first sensor activated in response to the presence of a human test subject proximate the first sensor and sensing with a second sensor for a change from an ambient condition caused by the presence of the human test subject proximate the second sensor. The intoxication test is validated when a change from the ambient condition is detected by the second sensor during the time envelope defined by the first sensor.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2013Date of Patent: September 13, 2016Assignee: 1A Smart Start LLCInventor: Richard Goad

Patent number: RE49398Abstract: The invention comprises a wireless electrical interface system and method for establishing a non-intrusive interface with the vehicle's electrical subsystems required for the operation of an aftermarket electrical device, such as an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) or a GPS tracking device with integrated immobilizer technology. Said non-intrusive interface is established through utilizing engineered connectors for electrical connections to the vehicle's electrical system, and by incorporating wireless interface technology to establish a wireless electrical interface between the vehicle's electrical subsystems accessible only within the passenger compartment and the vehicle's electrical subsystems accessible only within the engine/trunk compartment, eliminating the conventional hardwired electrical interface between aftermarket electrical devices and the vehicle's electrical system.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 2020Date of Patent: January 31, 2023Assignee: 1A Smart Start LLCInventor: Jessie James Shafer
