  • Patent number: 6778646
Abstract: A system and method for coupling multiple home networks includes a first copper wire network, a second copper wire network, and a high pass coupler disposed between the first and second copper wire networks. The high pass coupler is configured to transfer data signals between the first and second copper wire networks, the data signals having frequencies greater than a maximum plain old telephone service signal frequency. Further, the high pass coupler is configured to prevent cross-talk of plain old telephone service, or voice-band, signals between the first and second copper wire networks. The data signals transferred typically include signals in accordance with the Home Phoneline Networking Alliance standard, and may also include broadband Internet access signals. In one embodiment, the high pass coupler is implemented in a residential gateway device.

  • Patent number: 6697358
Abstract: A system and method for emulating phone extensions in a packet telephony distribution system include using a gateway and an adapter. Signaling protocols between the gateway and the adapter provide procedures to enable typical analog phone system characteristics such as a dial tone and a line-in-use indicator. During an incoming or outgoing call, users of multiple phones on the packet telephony distribution system can make and receive calls or join a call in progress using methodologies commonly used for typical analog phone systems.

  • Patent number: 6694016
Abstract: An odd-order low-pass microfilter is disclosed for being interposed between a home telephone wiring network and a POTS, or voice band, device to separate voice-band signals from higher frequency signals, such as ADSL signals and home networking signals. The filter topology is substantially symmetric so that the filter is reversible in that either end of the filter may be directly coupled to the home telephone wiring network without impairing high frequency signal performance or the filter characteristic of the filter. In one embodiment, the filter is a three-pole filter with a single capacitor disposed between a pair of coupled inductors. Each of the coupled inductors advantageously has an interwinding capacitance over about 100 pF to improve the filter frequency response without increasing the cost of the filter. In another embodiment, the filter is a reversible three-pole filter with a single capacitor disposed between first and second pairs of uncoupled, or discrete, inductors.

  • Patent number: 6661805
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for automatically configuring an Ethernet device as either an Ethernet end station or as an Ethernet hub to permit the Ethernet device to be coupled to another Ethernet device regardless of whether the Ethernet devices are Ethernet end stations or Ethernet hubs and regardless of whether a straight-through or crossover cable is used to interconnect the Ethernet devices. According to one embodiment, a control device is disposed between an Ethernet device physical layer and a connector for periodically reversing a transmit/receive configuration of the device until an Ethernet link is established. More particularly, a plurality of multiplexers are positioned in front of the Ethernet physical layer to switch between transmit and receive leads of the same polarity to selectively reverse the transmit/receive configuration of the associated Ethernet device. In operation, the transmit/receive configuration of and Ethernet device is positioned in a default, or initial, setting.

  • Patent number: 6553087
Abstract: An interpolating bandpass filter for packet-data receiver synchronization comprises a single delay line that delays the passband-sampled data from the analog-to-digital converter, and a convolving structure that uses the delay line to implement a L-times oversampling bandpass filter. A separate accumulator accumulates a fractional phase difference that represents the frequency offset between the remote transmitter's frequency and the receiver's sampling frequency. The integer portion of the accumulator is used to determine the number of samples to delay the input of the filter, while the fractional portion is used to choose two coefficient sets closest to the desired delay and to interpolate between these two filter sets.

  • Patent number: 6542028
Abstract: An efficient demodulation and low pass filter structure comprises a shift-add-negate structure that effectively multiplies each received sample by a combined demodulation and filter coefficient, and an accumulator that accumulates the products. Low pass filter coefficients are selected such that the shift-add-negate structure implements multiplications by shifts, adds, and negations. In the preferred embodiment, the demodulation and low pass filter structure outputs three complex samples per symbol.

  • Patent number: 6529549
Abstract: An equalizer based symbol timing loop system incorporates existing receiver architecture to modify an input sample stream to match a transmitter's symbol rate. The system includes a phase detector that identifies a center tap in a linear equalizer in the receiver and then captures the value of the center tap at the beginning and end of a measurement period. The phase detector then multiples the captured value of the center tap at the end of the measurement period by the conjugate of the captured center tap value at the beginning of the measurement period. The phase detector then takes the arc tangent of the multiplication result. A loop filter coupled to the phase detector multiples the arc tangent result by a scalar and adds the result to a frequency difference estimate. A coefficient generator then determines the interpolation phase for an input sample stream based on the frequency difference estimate and generates interpolator coefficients based on the interpolation phase.
