  • Patent number: 10773317
Abstract: A rotating cutting tool that is internally cooled by cryogenic coolant, the rotating cutting tool has a cylindrical body including: a central bore that extends along a longitudinal axis of the cylindrical body; a plurality of cold flow delivery paths formed from radial bores that fluidly communicate with and extend radially-outwardly from the central bore; longitudinal grooves that are formed along an outer surface of the cylindrical body extending along the longitudinal axis and fluidly communicating with the radial bores; a bushing having an inner diameter closely conforming to the outer surface of the cylindrical body allowing the bushing to concentrically fit over the cylindrical body and the longitudinal grooves to form longitudinal passageways extending from the radial bores to one or more exhaust ports formed in the bushing proximate a rear face of the cylindrical body; and a plurality of flutes for cutting a workpiece each having a cutting edge formed from the bushing.

  • Patent number: 10413977
Abstract: A cryogenically cooled boring tool design reduces the effect of cryogen coolant on a workpiece caused by coolant leakage and coolant exhaust. A tool body has a cartridge for holding a cutting tool insert and a coolant supply path through the tool body and the cartridge for supplying cryogenic coolant to the tool insert. A feed transfer tube connects the coolant supply path in the tool body to the coolant supply path in the cartridge. Insulating tubes line portions of the coolant supply paths in the tool body and the cartridge. The shrinkage rates of the feed transfer tube and the insulating tubes cause the press fit of the insulating tubes to tighten the seal between the insulating tubes and the feed transfer tube when cryogenic coolant flows through the supply path. The exhaust ports on the tool for boiled-off cryogen remains outside of a workpiece bore.

  • Patent number: 10086446
Abstract: A rotating cutting tool that is internally cooled by cryogenic fluid has a generally cylindrical outer shape. At least one flute is formed on the cutting tool and a cutting edge is formed on an outer edge of the flute for cutting a workpiece. An internal cold flow delivery path for cryogenic coolant is in proximity to the cutting edge. A coolant cavity is formed in the cutting tool for supplying cryogenic coolant to the internal cold flow delivery path and a return path for cryogenic coolant is downstream from the cold flow delivery path. An exhaust port is coupled to the return path for exhausting cryogenic coolant to atmosphere. The exhaust port is remote from the cutting edge so that the cryogenic coolant is exhausted away from the cutting edge and away from a workpiece so that the cryogenic coolant does not cool and toughen the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 9821425
Abstract: A method for subcooling liquid cryogen that is used by a cutting tool uses the steps of dividing liquid phase cryogen between a subcooler feed line and tool feed line. The cryogen in the subcooler feed line is expanded to lower the pressure and decrease the temperature of the cryogen, and the expanded liquid cryogen from the subcooler feed line is added to the interior of a subcooler. A heat exchanger is positioned in the subcooler in contact with the expanded liquid cryogen. The cryogen in the tool feed line is subcooled below its saturation temperature by passing the cryogen through the heat exchanger, and the subcooled cryogen from the heat exchanger is supplied to the cutting tool. As a result, the subcooled cryogen supplied to the cutting tool is substantially 100% liquid cryogen without any vapor content.

  • Patent number: 8903311
Abstract: A method of wireless communication uses a fiber composite structure including a first conductive fiber composite layer comprising carbon fiber, a second conductive fiber composite layer comprising carbon fiber, and an insulating layer electrically isolating the first composite layer from the second composite layer. Communication devices such as transceivers are connected to the first and second composite layers and signals may be communicated to and from the communication devices through the composite layers. An AC or DC voltage may be applied to the first and second composite layers to conduct electrical power to the electrical devices without the requirement of separate wires.
