Abstract: This invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid fragment encoding a protein disulfide isomerase. The invention also relates to the construction of a chimeric gene encoding all or a portion of the protein disulfide isomerase, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of the protein disulfide isomerase in a transformed host cell.

Abstract: A phase detector in a programmable clock synchronizer for effectuating data transfer between first circuitry disposed in a first clock domain and second circuitry disposed in a second clock domain. The phase detector includes a series of flip flops disposed in parallel that sample the second clock signal with both a rising edge of the first clock signal and a falling edge of the first clock signal. By tracking movement in one-to-zero or zero-to-one transitions in the sampled clock signals, the phase detector is operable to determine the phase difference between the first and second clock signals.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method of coating a surface with a slip resistant coating. The method of the invention comprises either sequentially or simultaneously melting two different metal wires and directing droplets of the melted wires towards a surface to be coating. The resulting coating formed by this process tends to be rough and confers anti-slip properties to the surface. In one variation of the invention, the two different metal wires will be melted and atomized in a single spray gun. Alternatively, these wires may be melted in separate but adjacent spray guns. In either variation, the resulting metal sprays formed from the different wires will at least partially overlap.

Abstract: A memory device includes a memory array of thin film transistor (TFT) memory cells. The memory cells include a floating gate separated from a gate electrode portion of a gate line by an insulator. The gate electrode portion includes a diffusive conductor that diffuses through the insulator under the application of a write voltage. The diffusive conductor forms a conductive path through the insulator that couples the gate line to the floating gate, changing the gate capacitance and therefore the state of the memory cell. The states of the memory cells are detectable as the differing current values for the memory cells. The memory cells are three terminal devices, and read currents do not pass through the conductive paths in the memory cells during read operations. This renders the memory cells robust, because read currents will not interfere with the storage mechanism in the memory cells. The memory array can be fabricated using multiple steps using the same mask.

Abstract: An audio-based guide arrangement is provided for guiding a user along a target path by the use of stereo audio cues. The user's current location is sensed and compared to the target path. Sounds are fed to the user through left and right audio channels and these sounds are varied to indicate the user's divergence from the target path. In particular, the left and right channel sounds are varied in a complementary manner preferably by increasing the frequency of the sound in one channel whilst simultaneously decreasing the frequency of the sound in the other channel and vice versa.

Abstract: Polymerized fatty acid-based polyamides may be combined with low polarity and high polarity co-solvents to produce homogeneous water-in-oil emulsions. These emulsions have the appearance of white or translucent creams, with stiffnessranging from soft and greasy, to hard and able to support weight. These emulsions are stable in the presence or absence of surfactant, and are formed easily by mixing components with heat and then cooling. These emulsions are useful in applications favoring an oil base, such as skin creams and cosmetics with emulsions of low stiffness, and car polish with emulsions of greater stiffness.
Abstract: A field emission device, which among other things may be used within an ultra-high density storage system, is disclosed. The emitter device includes an emitter electrode, an extractor electrode, and a solid-state field controlled emitter that utilizes a Schottky metal-semiconductor junction or barrier. The Schottky metal-semiconductor barrier is formed on the emitter electrode and electrically couples with the extractor electrode such that when an electric potential is placed between the emitter electrode and the extractor electrode, a field emission of electrons is generated from an exposed surface of the semiconductor layer. Further, the Schottky metal may be selected from typical conducting layers such as platinum, gold, silver, or a conductive semiconductor layer that is able to provide a high electron pool at the barrier.

Abstract: A method for fabricating a III-V Group compound semiconductor comprising a step of epitaxially growing on an AlxGa1-xAs layer of lower Al content an AlxGa1-xAs layer of higher Al content, in which step a growth rate of the AlxGa1-xAs layer of higher Al content is made slower than a growth rate of the AlxGa1-xAs layer of lower Al content, thereby effectively inhibiting the occurrence of starting points of abnormal growth at the interface between the two layers.
Abstract: In an electronic device that uses a self-emissive display such as an organic EL display, terminal voltage of a battery is monitored with high precision. In a digital camera 10, an organic EL display 26 is driven by a battery 12. The terminal voltage of the battery 12 is detected and a CPU 20 compares the detected terminal voltage with a threshold voltage to determine whether or not a fully discharged state has been reached. The luminance level of an image for the next frame stored in a VRAM 24 is detected, and the threshold value is dynamically changed according to the luminance level.
Abstract: The invention relates to a fuel electrode for high-temperature solid electrolyte fuel cells and a process for manufacture of the electrode. The fuel electrode of the invention is a porous element composed of a high-melting metal, such as ruthenium, osmium, rhodium or iridium, or an alloy containing the metal. The process for manufacture of the fuel electrode comprises coating an electrode material with a solution or dispersion of the high-melting metal and/or its chloride, sintering the same and finally reducing the product.
Abstract: A bedding or seating product comprising a spring assembly made up of a plurality of parallel strings of springs joined to each other. Each of the strings of springs comprises a row of interconnected pocketed coil springs. Selected pockets of fabric are shorter than adjacent pockets, so coil springs in the selected pockets are under a greater load than adjacent coil springs. In one preferred embodiment, every other pocket is under a greater load than the adjacent pockets, resulting in a checkerboard arrangement in at least one area of the product.
Abstract: Recent efforts are underway to develop LSI circuits that operate at power supply voltages of 1-V or lower. It is a desire that this low core voltage circuits interface to 3.3-V I/O supply. A charge pump level converter for dual power supply application is proposed using low power and high speed interface to higher I/O supply. This circuit does not consume DC power it is suitable for low power and high speed interface and can be implemented using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication processes.
