Abstract: A multilayer linerboard product having a top layer made up of bleached/unbleached virgin or recycled pulp and at least one bottom layer made up of unbleached pulp. The external surface of the top layer has reduced gloss mottle and improved printing properties. In particular, the top surface of the multilayer linerboard has a Parker smoothness less than 6.5 and a Hagerty/Sheffield smoothness in the range of 240 to 280. Print voids on a flexo printed product are less than 0.20% (by area) as measured by image analysis. These improvements are achieved in an extended nip calender section having a heated calender roll, a backing roll or shoe and a conformable belt. Preferably, the nip width is 1 to 25 cm. The temperature of the surface of the heated calender roll is preferably maintained in the range of 300 to 500° F. The nipload between the heated calender roll and the conformable belt is preferably maintained in the range of 500 to 2,500 pli.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for calibrating a halftone imaging system is described which automatically compensates for drifts in overall system performance as well as for any substantial change in the imaging parameters. Calibration is achieved by optimizing the exposure level of the imaging system and linearizing the exposure level of the imaging system based on the determined optimized exposure level. The method and apparatus of the present invention are capable of calibrating an imaging system automatically by generating lookup tables and transfer functions without substantial operator intervention. Once calibration is achieved, subsequent imaging commands are automatically mapped to appropriate commands that produce a calibrated output image.

Abstract: A phase-sensitive method of inversion recovery MR imaging is provided, which is directed to a specified object. The method comprises the steps of applying an inversion-recovery MR sequence to the object to acquire a set of MR data for an initial image, wherein the initial image comprises a pixel matrix of specified size, each of the initial image pixels having an associated MR signal and a phase vector. The method further comprises generating a phase vector image from information provided by respective initial image pixels, the phase vector image having a matrix size which is substantially less than the matrix size of the initial image. A region-growing procedure is applied to the phase vector image to remove phase errors therefrom. Thereupon, the phase vector image is zoomed or expanded to a matrix of the same size as the initial image matrix. For multi-slice imaging where TI time is comparatively long, the method may employ a distributed interleave mode of data acquisition to reduce total imaging time.
Abstract: The invention provides a method for fabricating ultra-shallow, low resistance junctions. In the preferred embodiment, a nitrogen containing screen oxide layer is formed on an undoped area of a substrate by poly re-oxidation using rapid thermal processing in a nitrogen containing atmosphere. Impurity ions are implanted into the substrate, in the undoped area, through the nitrogen containing screen oxide layer to form lightly doped source and drain regions. A post-implant anneal is performed on the lightly doped source and drain regions using a rapid thermal anneal in a nitrogen containing atmosphere. The nitrogen containing screen oxide layer: prevents surface dopant loss during post implant anneal; prevents gate oxide degradation during ion implantation and screen oxide stripping; and acts as a diffusion barrier, reducing oxygen enhanced diffusion. Alternatively, the poly re-oxidation can be performed in an O2 atmosphere followed by a rapid thermal anneal in a nitrogen containing atmosphere.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a quick set composition and a method for preparing the composition. The composition comprises an aqueous sol of a polymer having a backbone that contains pendant cationic groups and pendant acid groups. The sol is prepared by forming a solution of a polymer that contains pendant cationic groups and pendant acid groups in an aqueous-based solvent that contains water and a suitable organic solvent and removing a sufficient amount of the organic solvent from the solution to form a composition characterized by being reversibly dissolvable and reconstitutable by addition and removal of a suitable organic solvent. The composition of the present invention provides quick-set films that can be prepared in the absence additional surface active agents and with a substantial absence of organic solvents.

Abstract: A photographic film unit has a spool having a shaft and a pair of opposed flanges fixed to the shaft. The shaft defines a spool axis. The flanges each have an inner face and an outer face. The inner faces each have a main portion and a periphery. The periphery is disposed radially and axially outward from the main portion. The filmstrip has opposed first and second ends. The first end is wound on the shaft. The filmstrip has a transverse dimension less than the axial separation of the main portions. A leader is conjoined with the second end. The leader has an inner segment adjoining the filmstrip and an outer segment adjoining the inner segment. The inner segment has a transverse dimension less than the axial separation of the main portions. The outer segment has a transverse dimension less than the axial separation of the peripheries.
Abstract: An improved and new process for fabricating a planarized structure of polysilicon plugs, embedded in silicon oxide has been developed. The planarizing method comprises a two-step CMP process in which the first. CMP step comprises chemical-mechanical polishing using a first polishing slurry which is selective to polysilicon and the second CMP step comprises chemical-mechanical polishing using a second polishing slurry which polishes both polysilicon and silicon oxide. The processing time of the two-step CMP process is significantly less than the processing time of a one-step CMP process requiring an over-polish period. This reduced processing time reduces the cost of the CMP operation and at the same time produces a product with superior planarity and without reliability degradation due to residues of polysilicon.

Abstract: A computer-implemented system, method, and product are provided to designate and translate traces of original instructions of an executable file at run time based on dynamic evaluation of control flow through frequently executed traces of instructions. Such designation typically reduces unnecessary translations and optimizations, and thereby increases execution speed and reduces the usage of memory and other resources. The invention includes a hot trace identifier to identify frequently executed traces of instructions and a hot trace instrumenter to instrument such frequently executed traces so that control flow through them may be recorded. If the amount or rate of control flow through a frequently executed trace exceeds a threshold value, a hot trace selector is invoked to select a hot trace of original instructions including those of the frequently executed trace. The hot trace may be dynamically optimized.

Abstract: An encoding apparatus includes a selector for periodically selecting fields of an interlaced video signal to be converted to respective progressive scanning frames, by a scanning converter which doubles the number of scanning lines per field. The apparatus encodes these frames by intra-frame encoding or unidirectional predictive encoding using preceding ones of the frames, and encodes the remaining fields of the video signal by bidirectional prediction using preceding and succeeding ones of the progressive scanning frames for reference. The resultant code can be decoded by an inverse process to recover the interlaced video signal, or each decoded field can be converted to a progressive scanning frame to thereby enable output of a progressive scanning video signal.
