Patent number: 7607122Abstract: A mechanism is provided, where a post-build utility is used to store stack and call tree information within a section of an executable program or separate file. The stack information aids an authentication module during the execution of the program in walking up a stack in order to obtain return addresses on the stack. In one aspect of the invention, by comparing the return address sequence to the call tree sequence, which specifies the allowed function call sequence of the program, a determination can be made whether the program is executing (as evidenced by the stack) the way it should be executing (as required by the call tree). If the call tree sequence differs from the return address sequence, a suspicion is raised that a hacker is attempting to jump from foreign code into sensitive code of the program by changing the function calling sequence.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2005Date of Patent: October 20, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Kristjan E. Patent number: 7605855Abstract: A system of taking images of different sensitivities at the same time uses both an image sensor, and an auxiliary part to the image sensor. The image sensor element can be a photogate, and the auxiliary part can be the floating diffusion associated with the photogate. Both the photogate and the floating diffusion accumulate charge. Both are sampled at different times. The floating diffusion provides a lower sensitivity amount of charge than the photogate itself. The system can have a photogate and floating diffusion in each pixel along with a select transistor, a reset transistor, and a follower transistor. All of this circuitry can be formed of CMOS for example. The system can also operate in a column/parallel mode, where each column of the photo sensor array can have a column signal processor which samples and holds the reset signal, the floating diffusion signal and the photogate signal.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 2005Date of Patent: October 20, 2009Assignee: Aptina Imaging CorporationInventors: Yibing Michelle Wang, Sandor Barna

Patent number: 7603621Abstract: An interface is presented that can be used by those with little or no computer skills and little or no reading skills. In an exemplary embodiment, the icon pictures are detailed enough that they do not need text to be understood. Most icons do not require that they be clicked to be selected, rather they select on cursor hover. When an icon is hovered over, in an exemplary embodiment, it increases in size to make it easier for a user to select it. The interface has a help function that provides a voice that tells the function of an icon when the icon is moused over or otherwise tentatively chosen by a user. The help function voice may be accompanied by a virtual companion—a picture of a person, who, in some embodiments, is animated and appears to be speaking the help text.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2006Date of Patent: October 13, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Kentaro Toyama, Aman Sagar, Indrani Medhi

Patent number: 7603609Abstract: A method of detecting error during transfer of instructions from a data memory to a computer processor. At the time of the commencement of transmission of the instructions, the raw data signal is checked for an error detection code indicating data corruption. If the error detection code indicates no data corruption, the transmission of the instruction to the computer processor is completed. However, if data corruption is indicated, the raw data signal is substituted with a predetermined reserved signal or instruction and transmitted to the computer processor. An attempt is made to correct the corrupted data in the raw data signal and, if it is corrected, the corrected data signal is subsequently retrieved and the corrected data signal is processed by the computer processor. The corrupted raw data signal in the data memory may be replaced with the corrected data signal.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2007Date of Patent: October 13, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Jonathan M Haswell, Kevin G Kramer
