Abstract: Novel Bacillus thuringiensis genes encoding toxins which are active against lepidopteran insects have been cloned from novel lepidopteran-active B. thuringiensis microbes. The DNA encoding the B. thuringiensis toxins can be used to transform various prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes to express the B. thuringiensis toxins. These recombinant microbes can be used to control lepidopteran insects in various environments.

Abstract: A solenoid-actuated latchable relay is controlled by a microprocessor that turns on at least one triac to selectively energize a solenoid coil with a desired polarity energization signal. The triac is only operated momentarily so that a single energization pulse is applied to the coil to move an associated magnetic plunger to a position corresponding to the polarity of the pulse. The magnetic plunger is latched in this position until another pulse is applied to change the position.
Abstract: A receiver (9) for receiving a plurality of different signals at the same time, said receiver (9) comprising means for identifying at least one strongest signal of said plurality of different signals and means for attenuating said at least one strongest signal with respect to the other of said plurality of signals wherein the said attenuating means comprises hybrid means (140 and 160).
Abstract: Forming a vertical MOS transistor or making another three-dimensional integrated circuit structure in a silicon wafer exposes planes having at least two different crystallographic orientations. Growing oxide on different crystal planes is inherently at different growth rates because the inter-atomic spacing is different in the different planes. Heating the silicon in a nitrogen-containing ambient to form a thin layer of nitride and then growing the oxide through the thin nitrided layer reduces the difference in oxide thickness to less than 1%.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for using different error correction code algorithms to encode and to decode contents of blocks within a non-volatile memory are disclosed. According to one aspect of the present invention, a method for storing data within a non-volatile memory includes identifying a first block into which the data is to be stored, and obtaining an indicator associated with the first block. A determination may then be made regarding whether the indicator indicates that the data is to be encoded using a first algorithm. The data is encoded using the first algorithm when it is determined that the data is to be encoded using the first algorithm, after which point the data encoded using the first algorithm is written into the first block.

Abstract: A recording of a televised content stream that has been recorded by a digital recorder is periodically refreshed with updated commercials by pushing the updates down to the viewer's device or pulling the updates from the source, so that when the viewer plays back the recording, he may view, if desired, commercials that are more timely than those that were originally recorded.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for detection of electromechanical and mechanical errors in an electron beam device is provided. First the existing subfield is divided into a gridlike structure where each grid can be considered a target. Then a plurality of target points are provided on each grid for measuring combined directional variances. The separated horizontal and vertical variances is also measured for each of the target points. This leads to the performance of a significance tests, based on the F statistic which we refer to as FHV, for horizontal and vertical values of each target points during which FSTITCH values are also obtained. The FSTITCH values are then compared for horizontal and vertical values and an error alert provided when there is a sufficiently large disparity between the separated FSTITCH values. In an alternate embodiment of the present invention, a three dimensional grid is also provided to be used in a similar manner.

Abstract: A probe testing apparatus reads the surface shape of a contact pad in pressure contact with a contact probe, and differentiates the read surface shape to extract a multiplicity of flat parts. Next, the probe testing apparatus complements the multiplicity of flat parts to generate a reference shape, and subtracts the reference shape from an averaged surface shape to detect a plurality of recesses having a predetermined depth or more. Next, the probe testing apparatus selects one from the plurality of recesses corresponding to reference information, enlarges the selected recess outward by predetermined dimensions, and subtracts the reference shape from the initial surface shape at the position of the enlarged recess to detect an impression of the contact probe. Finally, the probe testing apparatus determines from the position and depth of the detected impression whether the contact probe is acceptable or defective.

The head portion is defined by a smooth top surface and an undulant, uneven side surface capable of being engaged and mated by an adjusting tool having a complementary undulant, uneven side surface capable of being engaged and mated by an adjusting tool having a complementary undulant, uneven surface for initially adjusting the air/fuel mixture in the carburetor. A blocking curb extends from the carburetor body to a level which at least substantially corresponds to a projecting extent of each adjustment screw and being closely spaced to the screw head to prevent the screw from being turned by commonly available tools, but to permit the screw to be adjusted by the adjusting tool.
