  • Patent number: 8977958
Abstract: A framework for enabling a community of users to share help information about an application program. The framework includes a mechanism for users to generate and share help information and a mechanism for users to access help information created by other users. To generate help information, tools may be incorporated into an application to enable users to capture information about the application as they are performing functions. Those tools capture as a video clip a representation of screen displays created by the application as the user interacts with the application to perform a function about which help information is to be generated. Along with the scenes captured in the video clip, application context information and explanatory material, such as an audio narration, can be captured. The mechanism to access help information includes a server to which video clips can be posted and cataloged, allowing identification of clips in response to user input describing a required help topic.

Abstract: A filter and fabrication process for a thin film filter that is based on frustrated total internal reflection and multiple waveguide layers, in which the waveguide modes are resonantly coupled. The physics of the design is related to prism coupling of light into planar waveguides, and waveguide coupling between planar waveguides in close proximity. Embodiments include a filter that acts as a bandpass filter and polarizer, a filter that acts as a bandpass filter, polarizer and angle filter (spatial filter), a filter that is widely tunable, and a filter that is widely tunable in both peak transmission wavelength and width. Methods of fabrication are disclosed, and methods to correct for manufacturing errors in thin film deposition are described. The filter embodiments can also be used in reflection as notch filters in wavelength and angle, for a particular polarization component.

  • Patent number: 8978028
Abstract: Described is installing multiple software packages to a computing device in a single transaction, whereby the multiple package installation commits if successful, or the device is rolled back to a determined state if unsuccessful. A client process provides a system service (installer) with a package, and the service partitions package installation actions into execution, commit and rollback phases, with the execution phase run for each package. If successful, the transaction is committed by performing the multiple commit phases. If unsuccessful, the installation is rolled back via the rollback phases. The phases may be interleaved, with execution and commit phases performed in FIFO order, and rollback phases performed in LIFO order. A client process may dynamically determine which packages to install, a client process may be embedded in a package and join the transaction, and/or one client process may delegate control to another client to add package actions to the transaction.

  • Patent number: 8978132
Abstract: An apparatus providing for a secure execution environment including a microprocessor and a secure non-volatile memory. The microprocessor executes non-secure application programs and a secure application program. The non-secure application programs are accessed from a system memory via a system bus. The secure application program executes in a secure execution mode. The microprocessor has secure execution mode logic that monitors conditions corresponding to the microprocessor associated with tampering, and causes the microprocessor to transition to a degraded operating mode from the secure execution mode following detection of a first one or more of the conditions. The degraded operating mode exclusively provides for execution of BIOS instructions. The secure non-volatile memory is coupled to the microprocessor via a private bus, stores the secure application program. Transactions over the private bus are isolated from the system bus and corresponding system bus resources within the microprocessor.

  • Patent number: 8978137
Abstract: A system for retroactively detecting malicious software on an end user system without performing expensive cross-referencing directly on the endpoint device. A client provides a server with information about files that are on it together with what it knows about these files. The server tracks this information and cross-references it against new intelligence it gathers on clean or malicious files. If a discrepancy is found (i.e., a file that had been called malicious, but that is actually benign or vice versa), the server informs the client, which in turn takes an appropriate action based on this information.

  • Patent number: 8977022
Abstract: A computed tomography method for determining a volumetric representation of a sample comprising reconstruction initial volume data of the sample from x-ray projections of the sample taken by an x-ray system, determining a part of the reconstructed initial volume data to be updated, and executing an iterative update process configured to generate, using an iterative reconstruction method, updated volume data only for the part of the volume data determined to be updated. Determining the part of the sample volume to be updated comprises individually evaluating every single voxel in the reconstructed initial volume data, based on available quality information for the reconstructed initial volume data, whether or not the voxel fulfils a predetermined condition indicating that an update is required for the voxel, and the iterative update process generates the updated volume data only for the voxels which have been determined that an update is required.
