Patents Assigned to A. E. Bishop Research Pty. Limited
  • Patent number: 5529037
Abstract: A rotary valve for an internal combustion engine, of the hollow cylindrical type, characterized in that there are provided in a bore of a cylinder head, in which the valve rotates, oil applicators arranged on either side of openings in the valve, each applicator being loaded by a spring against the surface of the valve at a position such that each applicator bears against the surface of that part of the valve lying between the outer axial extremities of the openings and an adjacent circumferential seal, each applicator allowing flow of oil through it onto the surface of the valve by means of one or more small internal passages.

  • Patent number: 5526780
Abstract: A rotary valve assembly for an internal combustion engine characterized in that the valve has a combination of axial sealing elements (21,22) and inner circumferential sealing elements (23,24) arranged to form a first seal pressurizing cavity extending circumferentially between the axial sealing elements (21,22) and two second seal pressurizing cavities each lying between the inner (23,24) and adjacent outer (25,26) circumferential sealing elements axially on each side of a window opening in a cylinder head (16) in which the valve rotates, the arrangement being such as to permit high pressure combustion gas to pass from the first cavity to the two second cavities whereby curing combustion the outer circumferential sealing elements (25,26) are caused to seal the second pressurizing cavities by being forced against the axially outermost sides of circumferentially extending grooves (36,37) in which they are located to prevent axially outward movement of gas, and the inner circumferential sealing elements (23,24)

  • Patent number: 5509386
Abstract: A rotary valve (10) of an internal combustion engine, of the hollow cylindrical type for rotation in the bore (20) of the cylinder head of the engine, the valve (10) having oil and gas seals (17,14) to prevent leakage of oil to the combustion chamber and leakage of gas from the combustion chamber, each gas seal being of the piston ring type and each oil seal consisting of a non-rotating annular member (17), a seal (21) between it and the bore in which the valve (10) rotates, an annular cavity (24) lying peripherally in a small radial clearance between the valve (10) and the bore (20) and extending between the gas sealing ring (14) and the seal (21) on the annular member (17), the annular member (17) having a substantially radially disposed face (18) arranged to seal slidingly against a radially disposed face (19) on the valve (10), the quality of these faces (18,19) being such as to allow migration of oil between them but sufficient when combined with the radial depth of the faces (18,19) to prevent oil from

  • Patent number: 5503124
Abstract: A rotary valve (10) for an internal combustion engine, of the hollow cylindrical type, having one or more openings (14) arranged to pass periodically over a window in the cylinder head bore, characterized in that the valve (10) also incorporates at least one tongue (34) projecting from the axially central point of the leading edge of at least one of the openings (14), the external surface of the tongue (34) having the same profile as the outer cylindrical surface (35) of the valve (10), the tongue (34) extending from the leading edge (24) of the opening (14) to an extent sufficient to support the center of an axially extending seal during that period when the leading edge (24) of the opening (14) crosses such seal.
