Abstract: A multi-stage axial turbine (typically between 4 and 10 stages) designed to operate more efficiently with partial admission of low temperature steam in each stage except the last one or two stages. Each stage of the subject turbine operates efficiently with smaller pressure drops thereby maintaining much smaller reductions in fluid density per stage. Each stage has blisks built as a single piece and the steam passages built into the periphery of the blisks. Each subsequent stage then only requires a small increase in flow area that can be achieved by using only a small increase in admission and blade height.
Abstract: The invention provides, in some aspects, a system for rendering images, the system having one or more client digital data processors and a server digital data processor in communications coupling with the one or more client digital data processors, the server digital data processor having one or more graphics processing units. The system additionally comprises a render server module executing on the server digital data processor and in communications coupling with the graphics processing units, where the render server module issues a command in response to a request from a first client digital data processor.
Abstract: In one aspect there is disclosed a walking aid (10). The walking aid (10) comprises a support leg (12) having an operative upper end (16) and an operative lower end (18). The walking aid (10) further comprises a wheel assembly (14) for operative attachment to the lower end (18) of the support leg (12). The wheel assembly (1.4) is adapted to be pushed in a forward direction by a user resting on the support leg (1.2). The wheel assembly (14) comprises a chassis (26) supporting (i) at least one wheel (28) and (ii) a stop (30). The stop (30) is operatively adapted to co-operate with the at least one wheel (30) such that a torque applied to the support leg (12) by the user will arrest movement of the wheel assembly (14) in the forward direction.
Abstract: A hitch assembly comprising a receiver having an opening for receiving a hitch member, an anti-rattle member secured with respect to the receiver, and a hitch member comprising a hitch body configured to be received by the receiver, and an engagement portion, wherein when the hitch body is received by the receiver, the engagement portion bears against the anti-rattle member causing at least a portion of the anti-rattle member to resiliently deform in a manner that a reaction force from the resilient deformation causes the hitch body to bear against the receiver.

Abstract: Most of the internet traffic today is carried out via the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). The main advantage of TCP is that it provides reliable data transfer to the application layer and simplifies programming. The protocol maximizes data throughput but may also lead to noticeable transmission delay in wide area networks (WAN). A client-server based medical image viewing system is disclosed that achieves high data throughput over TCP without impacting responsiveness. Special timestamp messages inserted into the data stream allow the system to detect situations where network latency increases noticeably and to obtain a reliable estimate of sustained transfer bandwidth. The system applies a feedback scheme that avoids network delays by limiting send bandwidth. In addition other parameters, in particular image compression settings, are dynamically adjusted depending on current network quality.
Abstract: A clamping apparatus for clamping a sheet to a supporting structure of an agricultural storage apparatus. The clamping apparatus includes a first clamping section and at least one second clamping section and is attached to a wall of the supporting structure. The, or each, second clamping section includes a lever section and a catch section pivotably attached to the lever section. In use, a section of the sheet is clamped between the first clamping section and the catch section of the, or each, second clamping section thereby securing the sheet to the supporting structure.

Abstract: Tag apparatus for attachment to the ear of an animal including a male member with a stem and a penetrating head for penetrating the ear; a portion that abuts against the hack of the ear and cannot be pulled out of the ear, said portion having an end that is not directed towards the head of the animal when the apparatus is fitted to the ear; such that when the apparatus is fitted to the ear, the apparatus has no overhanging material on which the animal can entangle the tag apparatus on a structure.
Abstract: A drill rod handler provides rods to be used to form a drill string in on-shore drilling operations. The drill rod handler includes side arms which are moveable to encourage drill rods to roll towards or away from a center line of the drill rod handler. A working arm is arranged to grasp a centrally located drill rod, and to raise it from a horizontal to a vertical configuration. The working arm may then slew to correctly position the drill rod at the correct location for use.
Abstract: A hydrometallurgical process for the removal of arsenic and antimony from a so-called “dirty” copper concentrate (101) is described. The process comprises the following steps: Step 1: repulping (100) the “dirty” copper concentrate with an alkaline lixiviant (102, 103), and subjecting the “dirty” copper concentrate to an alkaline leaching process (“the Leach”) in a Leach reactor (110). The arsenic and antimony are dissolved in the Leach to produce a “clean” copper concentrate (138) and leach discharge liquor (132). Step 2: subjecting the Leach discharge liquor (132) to a lime treatment step (151) in order to regenerate (150) the alkaline lixiviant as well as precipitate an impurity rich precipitate (161) containing arsenic and antimony. Then the impurity rich precipitate (161) is separated (160) from the regenerated alkaline lixiviant (162). The impurity rich precipitate is washed and disposed of in an environmentally safe condition.
Abstract: Intact, bacterially-derived minicells can safely introduce therapeutically effective amounts of plasmid-free functional nucleic acid to target mammalian cells. To this end, functional nucleic acid can be packaged into intact minicells directly, without resort to expression constructs, the expression machinery of the host cell, harsh chemicals or electroporation.

Abstract: A method for controlling operation of a CPAP apparatus. The apparatus has a blower, a patient interface, an air delivery conduit for delivering air from the blower to the patient interface, a sensor for determining the pressure in the patient interface, and a control mechanism that causes air to be delivered at a desired pressure to the patient interface and that detects transitions between inhalation and exhalation of a respiratory cycle of a patient in order to synchronize the blower output with the patient's efforts. In one form the CPAP apparatus provides pressure in accordance with a bi-level waveform with at least one characterizing parameter of the waveform being automatically adjusted in accordance with indications of sleep disordered breathing. The indications of sleep disordered breathing can be one or more of snoring, apnea, hypopnea, and flow limitation.
