Abstract: A method for manufacturing an opening device for a package is disclosed. The opening device comprises an outer wall portion an an inner layer of substantially gas-tight material, the outer wall portion including a first tearing notch defining an opening and a second tearing notch defining a grip tongue, and the outer wall and the inner layer being interconnected substantially over their total surfaces facing each other with the outer wall portion and the inner layer being separated within an area substantially under the grip tongue. The method comprises the steps of coating the inner layer with an adhesion preventing coating within an area corresponding to said grip tongue, and connecting the inner layer to the substantially rigid outer wall portion.

Abstract: A packaging machine is disclosed in which carton sealing is accomplished by applying a sealing ribbon to an open end of a folding flap carton in a series of same. The ribbon is then cut, withdrawn a predetermined distance, adhered to an open end of the next carton in the series and ribbon tension is relieved as the next carton is fed with the ribbon adhered thereto.

Abstract: A laminated paper product having use as a disposable substitute for cloth produced from a layer of paper having a layer of plastic material by so controlling the attachment between the two layers that the resulting laminate is capable of being folded like a soft cloth.

Abstract: A closure is provided and includes a sealing member and a cover for sealing and closing a container opening. The sealing member is sealed to the inner and outer walls of the container, and in one embodiment, an annular, ring-shaped element is provided for supporting the sealing member on the inside surface of the cover. In all embodiments, the cover includes a flange sealed to the external wall of the container, with the flange including a line of perforations forming a tear strip for removing the cover from the container. In the preferred embodiment, the removal of the cover causes the ring-shaped element to penetrate the sealing member and to form an annular opening in the sealing member so that the contents may be smoothly poured from the container.

Abstract: A packaging machine is disclosed in which leading and trailing carton flaps are folded by means of a pair of folding pins positioned intermediate adjacent cartons in a series of cartons. The folding pins are movable along substantially circular paths to fold the flaps inwards over the ends of the cartons positioned adjacent to each other.

Abstract: A blank for forming a receptacle is provided which includes a substantially circular bottom member, a pair of side members each connected to portions of said bottom member, and each of said side members including at one end thereof handle ears integrally formed with the side members. The blank is erected to form a receptacle wherein the bottom member forms the bottom wall of the receptacle, and the side members cooperate to form the sidewall of the receptacle. The handle ears are formed on opposite ends of the side members, such that when the blank is formed into a receptacle, the handle ears are positioned diametrically opposite each other on the sidewall of the receptacle.

Abstract: A packaging machine is disclosed in which the carton storage, feeding and opening station is adjustable for different size cartons. The storage area has an adjustable bottom and walls and the opening mechanism has an adjustable path of travel, dependent upon the carton size.

Abstract: A blank and a container formed from the blank is disclosed which comprises a first member having a first thickness which includes a bottom field and a plurality of side fields which project upwardly from the bottom field to define a cavity when the blank is formed into a container. The side fields include side edges which define cut-out portions between adjacent side edges. A second member having a second thickness less than the first thickness is provided and arranged in overlying relation to the first member and extends beyond the side edges of the side fields to completely fill the cut-out portions. The portion of the second member that fills the cut-out portions can be folded upon itself to define sealing flap means when the blank is formed into a container, the sealing flap means being operative to seal adjacent side fields together along their side edges.

Abstract: An improved package is provided which is formed from a blank of rigid material, such as cardboard, and an internal lining of plastic material, with the rigid blank including a bottom wall and a plurality of side walls. The internal lining extends over the top edge of the side walls and along the exterior walls of the package to define an exterior lining. The free edge of the exterior lining includes a flange extending in a direction outwardly from the side walls of the package. In addition, extension flaps of one package are operable to act as a stop and engage a portion of another package nested therewith to prevent the nested packages from being wedged within each other.

Abstract: Apparatus for manipulating carrying bags which are initially in a planely compressed state in a storage compartment. The bags are held on a carriage which may be rolled into and out of the storage compartment. Drive means secured to the storage compartment mate with driven means on the carriage, which driven means are adapted to feed the compressed bags to an opening and raising station. The opening and raising station includes a bottom plate pivotally mounted about a horizontal axis between a substantially horizontal position in which it supports an open bag and a substantially vertical position in which grip members are adapted to grip a portion of the compressed bag in order to pull the bag into an open form, after which the bottom plate is elevated into a higher position. The movement of the bottom plate is coordinated with two spades adapted to be pushed into a partly raised bag in order to be moved apart therein to maintain the bag in its open form.

Abstract: A locking container is disclosed which comprises a bottom wall and at least one wall projecting upwardly from the bottom wall so as to define a cavity. The container further includes a flange projecting outwardly from the wall and provided with reinforcing means secured thereto which extend inwardly from the wall into the cavity. The reinforcing means are adapted to receive and lock in place a cover member in sealing relationship to the container.
