  • Patent number: 8911622
Abstract: An apparatus and method for skimming oil and other liquid hydrocarbons and contaminates floating at the surface of a body of water or other suspending liquid. A rigid skimming surface such as a drum or disc is floatably supported on pontoons. The skimming surface is rotatable about an axis substantially parallel to the water surface. The skimming surface is covered with removably attached sorbent material which improves the efficiency of the oil recovery operation and which, when worn or soggy, can be removed and discarded without discarding the skimming surface.

  • Patent number: 6887387
Abstract: A skimmer for removing oil and paramagnetic chips from a contaminated body of machine tool coolant. The skimmer includes a frame and an endless tube partially trained within the frame that defines a travel path. The path of the tube includes a first section within the body of coolant and a second section out of the body of coolant. The skimmer further includes a magnet disposed within the tube, a drive system mounted to the frame and operatively coupled to the tube to power travel of the tube, and a wiper connected to the frame at a position along the travel path. The wiper is advantageously positioned adjacent to the tube such that the wiper removes oil and metal chips carried by the tube. A receptacle is includes that delineates a collection space positioned below the wiper to receive oil and metal chips.

  • Patent number: 5928520
Abstract: An oil skimmer and method of operation for removing hydrocarbon contaminates from ground water are disclosed. A drive pulley and upper portions of a pickup belt of a belt type oil skimmer are encased within a hermetically sealed housing. A seal collar forms an hermetic seal between the housing and a well casing. A vacuum source draws air from within a collection tank and from within the skimmer housing. The withdrawal of air from the skimmer housing functions to draw further air from within the well casing and from within the well itself Optionally, air under pressure is injected into ground strata at locations near, but spaced from the contaminate pickup area.

  • Patent number: 5645733
Abstract: A belt type oil and grease skimmer for removing hydrocarbon contaminants from surfaces of bodies of water is disclosed. The skimmer includes a housing and frame structure for positioning above a contaminated body of water. An idler roll and a coating nip roll pair are rotatively mounted on the structure for rotation about generally horizontal axes when the skimmer is in use. An endless belt is trained over the idler roll and between the nip rolls and is suspended in a contaminated body of water when the skimmer is in use. A pair of wipers are positioned on opposite sides of the belt at a wiping location between the idler roll and the nip rolls for removing belt adhered hydrocarbons. A receptacle is positioned to receive wiper removed hydrocarbons. The receptacle includes a heat chamber and a heat transfer wall for transferring heat from the chamber to heat collected hydrocarbons. The wipers skew the belt to cause the formation of a containment draining depression upstream from the wipers.

  • Patent number: 5378371
Abstract: An oil skimmer of the endless belt type is disclosed. The unit has an adjustment for adjusting the location of the axis of head pulley rotation and a floating tail pulley to assure accurate tracking of the belts on the pulleys. The tail pulley features L-shaped spokes having legs that provide limited pulley-to-belt contact, minimizing oil transfer from the belt to the tail pulley, and also providing a mechanism for forcing oil against a descending belt reach to provide enhanced oil pick-up. The tail pulley is provided with a catch frame and an anchored tether for catching the belt and the tail pulley in the event that the belt breaks.
