  • Patent number: 5247244
Abstract: As the dielectric constant and the halfwave voltage of electro-optic crystals having a fourfold axis of rotary inversion are oppositely dependent on the absolute temperature, but their product is nearly independent of temperature, temperature compensation in an ac voltage measuring system utilizing such an electro-optic crystal is provided by measuring the time averaged current through the crystal. Good electric isolation is achieved by a current sensing circuit which produces a pulsed light signal having a pulse rate proportional to the time averaged current through the crystal. The pulsed light signal is converted to an electrical signal for input to a digital computer which calculates therefrom, and from a reference current and voltage measured at a reference temperature, and a time averaged voltage measurement, a temperature correction factor which is applied to the crystal halfwave voltage used by the computer in calculating the instantaneous value of the voltage to be measured.

  • Patent number: 5245093
Abstract: A process for reacting a fluid phase (gaseous and/or liquid phase) in contact with a solid phase in a reaction zone, wherein the improvement in said process comprises reacting the fluid phase in contact with the solid phase in a horizontally-oriented fluidized bed vessel. The vessel includes at least two compartments or stages, and includes means for vibrating the vessel. The process of the present invention enables one to effect fluidization of the solid phase independently of the flow rate or velocity of the fluid phase, thus enabling proper contact time of the fluid phase with the solid phase and minimizing the amount of fluid phase reactant to be recycled.

  • Patent number: 5244285
Abstract: Squeeze film damper with a viscous damping agent between two concentric cylindrical surfaces (5) on the internal (3) and external (6) parts, respectively, of the damper. The clearance between these two surfaces (5) is supplied with a viscous damping agent, usually oil, from a groove (4) in the cylindrical surface on the internal part (3) of the damper. This groove (4) does not extend all around. In the lower part of the internal part (3) of the damper there are instead two pockets (7) which are separated from each other and from the long damper oil groove (4). When these two pockets (7) are supplied through channels (8) with oil of an adjusted pressure, a lifting force arises which acts on the internal part (3) of the damper so that this part and the associated shaft (1) are lifted and centered, whereupon during operation a damper clearance, extending all around, is obtained without mechanical means. • Patent number: 5233195
Abstract: Characteristics of moving webs are measured using a radiation source shutter which is rotatably movable between an opened-shutter position and a closed-shutter position and structured to permit access to the radiation source in the closed-shutter position. The source is configured to produce a fan-shaped radiation beam which passes through the web to a detector. The sizing of the fan-shaped beam and the detector together with the spacing the source and the detector are such that the beam width is substantially less than the detector while its length is greater than the detector. This novel beam shaping, detector arrangement provides composition insensitivity, increases solid beam angle and superior streak detection by aligning the beam length dimension with the direction of web movement.

  • Patent number: 5230588
Abstract: In a method and a device for paying out or hauling in a supply line cable of an underwater device from a ship or a suitable platform, the supply line cable is guided from a drum of a winch through a lower guide roller and over the edge of the ship. A pivoting device is rotated from a vertical position into a horizontal position about the axis of the lower guide roller, or about an axis parallel thereto, for lockingly coupling or uncoupling the cable coupling of the supply line cable to a cable coupling of another supply line cable. As a result of the rotation of the pivoting device, it serves as a horizontal working platform for the coupling or uncoupling process. The pivoting device is returned to its vertical position after the coupling or uncoupling has been completed. The pivoting device is dimensioned in such a manner that the cable couplings of the two supply line cables can be aligned with one another at a spatial distance governed by necessary cable connecting lines.
