  • Patent number: 5086193
Abstract: A process for the catalytic distillation production of alkylated aromatic compounds is provided wherein the vapor pressure of the olefin may be increased while maintaining the same olefin feed rate and aromatic to olefin ratio. In one embodiment a side stream from the vapor from the second column below the catalyst and olefin feed is condensed and rerouted to the aromatic make up stream from the reflux drum. The vapor pressure of the olefin in the lower end of the first column in the catalyst bed is thus increased which increases the equilibrium concentration of the olefin in the liquid phase. In another embodiment of the invention the effective driving force for the reaction is increased by injecting the olefin at different heights within the catalyst bed. If additional olefin is injected more catalyst bed height would be required, but the additional catalyst is more that offset by the increased throughput at the same overall olefin conversion.

  • Patent number: 5083360
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of making a repairable transformer having an amorphous metal core. The three uncut legs of an annealed wound amorphous metal core are covered with an adhesive material while leaving the cut leg and both adjoining radii covered, but not bonded. The core joint is opened and coils are placed over the legs that adjoin the cut leg. The core joint is closed and the edges of the joint and both adjoining radii are covered with an inner layer of porous material which is secured by an outer wrap of electrical grade steel. The resulting transformer can be easily repaired by unwrapping away the porous material that covers the cut leg and the adjoining radii, opening the core joint, replacing a defective coil or core, reclosing the core joint, and rewrapping the porous material and reclosing the outer layer of electrical grade steel.

  • Patent number: 5082529
Abstract: The stack reflectance is predicted from an on-line, wavelength dependent measurement of the sheet reflectance and the on-line measurement of the sheet opacity at a wavelength interval. The stack reflectance Rst is then used to predict and/or control stack color, preferably by using the parameter K/S=(1-Rst.sup.2)/2 Rst where K is the dye absorption coefficient and S is the dye scattering coefficient.

  • Patent number: 5080858
Abstract: The invention relates to a fuel assembly in the form of an elongated channel having several corners. The channel is connected to a coolant intended to flow through the channel. A bundle of similarly elongated fuel rods, retained by a plurality of spacers (8), is arranged in the channel. The spacer (8) comprises a number of cells surrounded by an outer frame which is formed from a band placed on edge. According to the invention, the band is extended on the upstream side of the spacer (8) by a skirt (12), in which openings (13) are provided. In certain of these openings deflection fins (14) have been arranged in order to deflect coolant, flowing along the assembly wall (6), in a direction towards the center of the respective spacer (8).

  • Patent number: 5080173
Abstract: A subsea well has tieback facilities for further sidetrack drilling. The well has an inner string casing hanger with an outer hanger portion and an inner hanger portion. The inner and outer hanger portions are latched together at the surface and lowered simultaneously. The inner casing string secures to the inner hanger portion. The tieback assembly includes an intermediate tieback conduit that extends into the bore of the outer hanger portion. An inner tieback conduit extend into the bore of the inner hanger portion. For later sidetrack drilling, the inner tieback conduit is pulled upward to unlatch the inner hanger portion from the outer hanger portion, retrieving the inner casing through the intermediate tieback conduit.

  • Patent number: 5080400
Abstract: A hub clamp will be used to connect two conduits together in end-to-end relationship. Each conduit has a pair of generally parallel load shoulders that extend around the conduit and are axially spaced from each other. The clamp has two sets of load shoulders, one for engaging each set of load shoulders on each end of the conduit. The clamp is in two halves, and when bolted together, draws the ends of the conduits toward each other. Each load shoulder is separated by a flank. The two flanks of the mating load shoulders are separated by a gap when fully made up. The first load shoulder of each conduit has multiple angled sections. The lead section is at a greater angle than the load section relative to a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the conduit. The clamp will be mounted releasably to an upper conduit so that it can slide inward and outward, for vertical conduit applications.

  • Patent number: 5080843
Abstract: An object is manufactured from a powdered ceramic material while using isostatic pressing. The powdered material is thereby supplied with a temporary organic binder and is formed into a preformed powder body (10). A major part of the binder is removed from the preformed powder body by driving off under heating, whereas a minor part of the binder, required for keeping the powder body together, is retained in the powder body. The powder body is provided with a gas-permeable embedding material (14) of glass, the retained minor part of the binder then being removed by additional driving off under heating and preferably by also treating the powder body with the surrounding gas-permeable embedding material with an oxidizing gas. The gas-permeable embedding material is then made gas-impermeable by heating and the preformed powder body, freed from binder, with the surrounding gas-impermeable embedding material is subjected to isostatic pressing.

  • Patent number: 5078437
Abstract: An electrical transformer having an integral cabinet with an apparatus for latching and locking the doors of the cabinet. The apparatus is comprised of a three point latch system. The first and second latch points are vertical latch rods which engage sills in the cabinet. The third latch point is a latch plate which rotates with a shaft extending through the first door and to which a handle is attached. In the secured position, the latch plate rotates behind a flange extending from an interior wall, thereby preventing the door from being pulled open. The internal wall divides the cabinet into low and high voltage compartments and forms a structural portion of the cabinet. A bolt extends through the first door, the second door, the latch plate and the flange, thereby preventing the doors from being pulled open and preventing rotation of the handle. A cylinder attached to the first door surrounds the head of the bolt and prevents access thereto.

  • Patent number: 5074906
Abstract: A method and an installation for recovering energy in the thermal destruction of pollutants in a gas emitted from a scrap preheating device (6,8), e.g. in an electro-steel furnace (1). The polluted gas is conducted through regenerative heat exchangers (12,15) before or after passing through a combustion chamber (4), for providing heat exchange between the polluted cold gas and the cleaned hot gas. The regenerative heat exchangers (12,15) are filled with a packing of a material suitable to be charged into the furnace (1) generating the gases which are used in the scrap preheating process, or into another nearby furnace. The packing is withdrawn completely or partly when the performance of a heat exchanger has deteriorated as a result of oxidation or clogging with dust. A new packing is supplied to the heat exchanger concerned, and the packing withdrawn is charged into one of said furnaces.

  • Patent number: 5073712
Abstract: A method and apparatus provide for determining properties of a web of traveling sheet material by scanning light including at least selected wavelengths such as IR and/or visible wavelengths across the web of material and also across at least two calibration samples. The signals generated in response to the scanning of the calibration samples is used to calibrate the scanning operation preferably on every scan. By providing at least two calibration samples, better estimates of average calibration parameters can be made and detection of a faulty calibration sample is facilitated. The calibration samples preferably are protected by mounting them within a scanner housing in relatively close proximity to a scanning beam generator. In addition, at least two compensation samples are supported substantially adjacent the moving web of material and preferably at least one compensation sample is positioned on each side of the web.

  • Patent number: 5070316
Abstract: The invention relates to a special embodiment of a plate which is to be able to transmit movement and compressive force as well as possess soft-magnetic properties with low losses and low reluctance. The latter requirement means, inter alia, that the plate, upon loading, will be subjected to a relatively great elastic deformation with an ensuing reduced ability to transmit movement and compressive force. By perforating the plate with a number of evenly distributed holes provided with pellets of a stiff resistant material with an axial length at least as great as the thickness of the plate, movement and compressive force may be transmitted from a compressive force-generating element via the plate to a compressive force-absorbing element without the plate being elastically deformed.
