  • Patent number: 12246671
Abstract: A flattened expanded metal strip (9) is wrapped into an airbag inflator filter (21) with the strip oriented such that the flattened rough side (17) of the strip is pointing toward the inside diameter (ID) of the filter and the flattened smooth side (15) is pointing towards the outside diameter (OD). With this orientation, the filter (21) is able to capture more slag than filters made using the standard wrapping method in which the smooth side is oriented inward. The expanded metal can be of various types including, for example, variable expanded metal (VEM) or standard expanded metal (SEM).

  • Publication number: 20250027210
Abstract: A PEM electrolyzer PTL is created from micro-expanded mesh metal foil layers to allow for a precise level of control over the thickness of the layers, porosity, tortuosity, pore size, interlayer connectivity, and surface roughness. Pore sizes range from 3 ?m to 30 ?m with a porosity (mesh open area) of 10-50%. A PEM anode pack assembly is formed from the micro-expanded PTL layers with a multi-layer expanded metal flow field and bipolar plate. The 3 subcomponents are diffusion bonded together to form an integrated pack and PVD coated on the outside surfaces.

  • Publication number: 20240421424
Abstract: A battery exhaust vent includes an expanded metal filter which acts as a heat sink to cool an overheating battery. The exhaust vent acts as a particulate filter and flame arrestor which reduces flames and particulate slag projectiles from being expelled outside a battery housing. Directional Flow Expanded Metal (DFEM) and Variable Expanded Metal (VEM) are utilized for their directional fins and associated plethora of openings offset in overlapping layers to create a cyclone effect for gases or particles passing through the filter. The fins and holes are offset from layer to layer within a multi-layer filter construction and are designed to immediately change the direction of the flames and burning particles relative to the input flame flow direction. The vent may include an elastomeric umbrella valve which seals the vent from external airflow but allows quick venting for internal gas pressure during a runaway event or excessive heating.

  • Publication number: 20240383433
Abstract: Filters (21) comprising a rolled expanded metal strip (13) are provided. The expanded metal strip (13) has an entrance zone (e.g., layer 1 and layer 2), a nozzle zone (e.g., layer 3), and, optionally, an exit zone (e.g., layers 4 and 5). The filter can also include an optional layer of woven wire mesh (e.g., layer 6). The filters have a thin wall (39) such that, in an embodiment, the ratio of the thickness (t) of the wall to the filter's outer diameter (OD) is less than or equal to 0.07, whereby the filter can weigh less and/or have a smaller envelope size than existing expanded metal filters. In an embodiment, the filter (21) can be used to filter and cool the gas stream produced by the rapid burning of the solid propellant (26) of an airbag inflator (157).

  • Patent number: 11363934
Abstract: The present disclosure provides a segmented rotary floor stripping pad having a plurality of symmetrical, polygonal pad segments secured together in partially overlapping relation to form an annular pad. The segments are preferably formed from non-woven polyester fibers and are secured radially along the overlapping, adjacent side edges by hot melt glue, ultrasonic welding or by stitching. There is no backing pad, and since the segments are symmetrical, the pad is reversible so that both sides can be used. The plurality of pad segments are secured together in an overlapping manner such that each pad segment presents an angled leading cutting edge and each pair of adjacent pad segments forms a radial fluid channel. Depending on the degree of overlap and the thickness of the pad segment, the presentation angle of the cutting edge can be varied.

  • Patent number: 11250969
Abstract: An all-wire weft-knit tubular sleeve can be knit from a plurality of electrically conductive wire filaments. Further, an electrically conductive bus wire can be interlaced in the weft knit pattern of the tubular sleeve to provide improved electrical contact along the entire length of the gasket. The exemplary weft-knit sleeve can allow for at least a 15% axial stretch without breaking the bus wire. The conductive wire filaments can be a copper/nickel alloy having a wire diameter of between about 0.075 mm and about 0.1 mm, a tensile strength of between about 70-125 KSI and an elongation of at least 12%.

  • Patent number: 10780488
Abstract: A wire mesh rivet (13) is provided which is used to produce a wire mesh isolator (11) in a bore (9) of a substrate such as a heat shield (7) for a vehicle exhaust system. The rivet (13) comprises a unitary wire mesh structure (19) which has a collar (15) and a shank (17). The collar (15) has a higher density than the shank (17), e.g., the collar (15) has the density of the finished isolator (11). The rivet (13) is formed into the finished isolator (11) by compressing the shank (17) to form a second collar, while restraining the original collar (15) from substantially changing its shape. The rivet (13) can include a metal insert (23) which prevents the wire mesh of the finished isolator (11) from experiencing high levels of compression when the substrate is fastened to its supporting structure.

  • Patent number: 10717032
Abstract: Expanded metal sheets are used to produce tubular filters. The expanded metal sheet has a multiplicity of rows of openings arranged to reduce nesting when the sheet is rolled on itself. In particular, the pitch between the rows of openings, the sizes of the openings, or both the pitch between the rows of openings and the sizes of the openings are varied to reduce nesting when the expanded metal sheet is rolled on itself. The filters can include external circumferential grooves, rounded corners produced by a point loading process, textured surfaces between openings, and/or torturous internal paths produced by non-perforated areas of an expanded metal sheet. The expanded metal sheet can be composed of carbon steel coated with a material having a higher heat conductivity, e.g., tin. Among other things, the filters can be used in automobile airbag inflators to capture slag and absorb heat produced by the inflator's explosive charge.

  • Patent number: 9540752
Abstract: “Tinkles” (also known as “gotchas”) (see reference number 20 in FIGS. 1 and 2) are portions of knitted metal loops produced when a tube of knitted wire mesh is cut into individual pieces. In the prior art, tinkles have been considered a fact of life and the approach has been to try to shake them out of the mesh or immobilize them on or in the mesh. By producing a knitted tube (11) having alternating segments (12,13) of knitted rows of yarn and knitted rows of wire, completely tinkle-free knitted socks are produced which are used to produce completely tinkle-free knitted wire mesh filters. Knitted wire mesh filters that cannot release tinkles because they do not have any tinkles can be used in such applications as fuel filters and airbag filters.
