Patent number: 7796526Abstract: An analysis device includes a connector, a display, a digital communication circuit and a processing circuit. The connector is configured to connect to a coaxial cable of a communication system, the communication system including a connection to a network employing internet protocol communications. The digital communication circuit is operably connected to the connector and configured to communicate information signals within the communication system via the connector. The digital communication circuit is operable to establish at least two types of connections through the communication system. The first type of data connection employs an internet protocol, while the second type of internet data connection employs a voice over internet protocol. The processing circuit is connected to the digital communication circuit. The processing circuit is operable to obtain diagnostic data relating to each of the first type of connection and the second type of connection.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2004Date of Patent: September 14, 2010Assignee: ActernaInventor: Walter L. Patent number: 7489641Abstract: A test device enables DOCSIS link testing in a HFC network without requiring the CMTS or other router at the headend of the HFC network to respond to ICMP messages. The test device includes a test packet generator for generating test packets having a destination Internet protocol (IP) address associated with a test device, a memory for storing transmission parameters of the test packets, and a test packet evaluator associated with the IP address in the generated test packets. The test packet evaluator receives the generated test packets after the test packets have been routed through a router at a head end of a HFC network and compares reception parameters for the received test packets to the transmission parameters stored in the memory.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 2005Date of Patent: February 10, 2009Assignee: ActernaInventors: Walter Miller, Gregory Massey, Michael Gotwals

Patent number: 7403486Abstract: An apparatus that includes a coupling, a signal level measurement circuit, a communication circuit and a processing circuit. The coupling is configured to connect to and received broadband RF signals from a coaxial cable termination of a communication network. The signal level measurement circuit is operably coupled to the coupling, and is operable to generate signal level measurements regarding a first set of the broadband RF signals. The communication circuit operable to obtain voice over internet protocol data packets from a second set of broadband RF signals. The processing circuit is operably connected to the communication circuit, and is operably connected to receive signal level measurements from the signal level measurement circuit. The processing circuit is operable to obtain diagnostic data relating to the second set of broadband RF signals.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2004Date of Patent: July 22, 2008Assignee: ActernaInventor: Robert J. Patent number: 6961370Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method, for determining the total frequency response of a communication system, include one or more testers each having a tuner, digital demodulation circuitry, and a controller that measures an absolute power level at the tester location for a particular channel and that measures a relative frequency response for the channel based on the tap weight coefficients from the digital demodulation circuitry. The absolute and relative measurements are combined and then recorded by each tester. The combined values of two or more testers are compared to determine the total frequency response of the communication system. The relative response measurements are converted from time domain to frequency domain by fast Fourier transformation. The controllers maintain a channel plan for sequencing the sweeping of consecutive channels.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2001Date of Patent: November 1, 2005Assignee: ActernaInventor: Daniel K. Patent number: 6590963Abstract: A modular test instrument comprises a base unit and one of a selection of application modules, neither being capable of performing end-user functions without the other. When physically assembled to one another, the base unit and application module comprise a structurally unitary device specialized for performance of application-specific end-user functions. The base unit is generic to all types of test to be provided, and comprises a display, a power supply, a user interface, and generic software to operate the display and user interface. Each application module is connected to the base unit in the same manner, so that the same base unit can he employed with a wide variety of application modules. The application modules can be readily and conveniently removed from and assembled to the base unit.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2001Date of Patent: July 8, 2003Assignee: ActernaInventors: Ali M.
