Abstract: A method and apparatus for subcarrier selection for systems is described. In one embodiment, a method for subcarrier selection for a system employing orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) comprises partitioning subcarriers into groups of at least one cluster of subcarriers, receiving an indication of a selection by the subscriber of one or more groups in the groups, and allocating at least one cluster in the one or more groups of clusters selected by the subcarrier for use in communication with the subscriber.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for subcarrier selection for systems is described. In one embodiment, the system employs orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). In one embodiment, a method for subcarrier selection comprises each of multiple subscribers measuring channel and interference information for subcarriers based on pilot symbols received from a base station, at least one of subscribers selecting a set of candidate subcarriers, providing feedback information on the set of candidate subcarriers to the base station, and the one subscriber receiving an indication of subcarriers of the set of subcarriers selected by the base station for use by the one subscriber.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for wireless communication are described. In one embodiment, a method for communicating with a subscriber comprises transmitting orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing (OFDM) signals to the subscriber, and receiving direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signals from the subscriber.
Abstract: An adaptive forward error correction system for mitigating interference and fading in RF data transmissions has a hub and subscriber stations transmitting and receiving forward error correction encoded data packets. The hub and subscriber stations count codewords and/or packets received with errors. The hub calculates a type of quality measure using the counts and compares this measure to quality thresholds. If an upper threshold is exceeded, the hub increases a size of transmitted active data fields and decreases a size of blank data fields. If a lower threshold is not met, the hub decreases a size of transmitted active data fields and increases a size of blank data fields. Similar changes by subscriber stations are directed by the hub. These changes are coordinated in headers associated with the packets or codewords, via a separate control channel or multi cast via a data stream used for transmitting the data packets.

Abstract: A network is described. In one embodiment, the network comprises multiple subscriber units to communicate with the base station using an orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) protocol, and a base station. The base-station includes a memory unit to store broadband spatial signature vectors associated with each subscriber and traffic channel allocation logic. The vectors are a function of frequency. The traffic channel allocation logic allocates OFDMA channels using the broadband spatial signature vectors of the subscribers.
