  • Patent number: 6909827
Abstract: Two sub-assemblies in a fiber optic device are fitted to mounting faces of a central section. The mounting faces are typically flat and mutually orthogonal, thus permitting the adjustment of the two sub-assemblies in decoupled degrees of freedom. This results in a simpler adjustment procedure for aligning the two sub-assemblies. Furthermore, the mounting of the sub-assemblies using the orthogonal mounting faces permits the use of relatively thin layers of adhesive that reduce misalignment problems arising from mismatched thermal expansion when the temperature changes.

  • Patent number: 6904065
Abstract: An approach for compensating for losses in a tunable laser filter comprising includes providing a tunable waveguide material and an amplifying material that have different compositions. The tuning material and the amplifying material are placed parallel to one another. The amplifying material is disposed so that it covers the tuning material at discrete locations. Carriers are injected simultaneously into both materials. The tuning material is spaced from the amplifying material at an average distance that is greater than the charge carrier diffusion length, so as to reduce avoid diffusion of charge carriers from the tuning material into the amplifying material. This prevents the amplifying material draining the charge carriers out of the tuning material, thus enabling the refractive index of the tuning material to be tuned for a desired wavelength effect.

  • Patent number: 6898227
Abstract: A semiconductor ridge laser with a tapered ridge is disclosed. The tapered ridge is designed to provide for both gain-medium amplification and mode conversion amplification, the latter resulting in a higher kink power than is obtainable with gain medium amplification alone. The power and lateral mode content of the output beam is determined by the ridge parameters, which include length, width, number of sections and degree and type of taper for the tapered sections. The output beam can be made to have a profile that is more compatible with the lateral modes on an optical fiber than a conventional highly astigmatic output beam by including power in the higher-order lateral modes as well as in the fundamental lateral mode.

  • Patent number: 6895089
Abstract: Resistance in parallel with inductors in a series leg of the low-pass filter facilitates changing input and output resistance of the filter with little or no change in the reactance of the inductors. Furthermore, the reactance of the capacitors in the shunt legs of the filter will be substantially unaffected. This assists the designer in matching the impedance of the filter in the pass-band while still providing substantial impedance mismatching in the stop-band without substantially affecting the characteristics of the filter. Facilitating impedance matching in the pass-band and impedance mismatching in the stop-band is accomplished without the need for more complex active components. POTS splitters making use of such filters can facilitate impedance matching of line and load termination in a telecommunications system in response to signals within the frequencies of typical analog telephony service while providing impedance mismatching in response to signals within the frequencies of typical xDSL service.
