  • Patent number: 8220160
Abstract: A utility knife includes a handle body having sidewall portions defining a guide channel, a blade shuttle mounted for extension and retraction movement within the guide channel, and a hand-grip lever coupled to the handle body at a fulcrum for pivotal movement between an at-rest position in which the blade shuttle is in a non-use position, to an in-use position in which the blade shuttle is in an extended position. In the non-use position, a blade mounted on the blade shuttle is enclosed in the guide channel. In the extended position, a portion of the blade projects from the guide channel. The hand-grip lever is rotatably coupled to the blade shuttle through a transmission comprising a pin coupled to the lever such that a distance from the fulcrum to the pin stays substantially fixed as the lever pivots between the at-rest and in-use positions.

  • Publication number: 20100088900
Abstract: A utility cutter includes a housing, a blade and blade shuttle, a blade trigger, and a trigger lock. The blade and blade shuttle are enclosed within the housing in a retracted position. The blade is extended from the housing in an extended position. The blade trigger includes a cavity and is coupled to the housing. The blade shuttle is conveyed from the retracted position to the extended position when the blade trigger pivots from a rest position to an engaged position. The trigger lock includes a projection and is accessible at the exterior of the housing through the blade trigger. The trigger lock is coupled to the blade trigger and the projection is in contact with the stop pin when the blade shuttle is in the retracted position. The blade trigger is pivotable from the rest position to the engaged position when the projection is released from the stop pin.

  • Publication number: 20080250651
Abstract: A knife includes a handle enclosing one or more of a blade, a blade shuttle, a transmission, and a trigger, where the handle includes a blade aperture. The blade shuttle is longitudinally moveable relative to the handle from a rest position to a first extended position and the blade shuttle is moveable longitudinally from the first extended position to a cutting position when the blade is engaged in a workpiece. The blade shuttle is automatically retracted from the cutting position to the rest position when the blade is disengaged from the workpiece. The blade is detachably secured within the blade shuttle and protrudes a first distance through the blade aperture at the first extended position. The blade is extended from the first distance a substantially fixed length when engaged in the workpiece. The blade is adapted to automatically retract within the handle when disengaged from the workpiece.

  • Publication number: 20030079347
Abstract: A deflectable safety shield extends transversely across a cutting plane in a protective guard position completely overlying the cutting edge of a utility knife. A portion of the shield extends over-center with respect to the cutting edge, thereby tending to hold the shield in the guard position in response to contact of the shield against the operator at the normal angle of engagement during follow-through that accompanies rapid slicing hand movements. The shield is resiliently biased for movement to the guard position by a torsion spring. The shield swings away from the cutting plane automatically in response to pressure engagement of the offset flange portion against the box surface, thus exposing the cutting edge. A stop leg is pivotably coupled to the shield providing the operator the option of limiting the pivotal movement range of the shield in the retracted position, for example, when cutting along the edge of a cardboard box.

  • Patent number: 6543140
Abstract: A utility knife and various manufacturing methods for the utility knife. In one embodiment, the utility knife includes: (1) a body having a cutting face and (2) a blade-holding slide mounted for linear movement within the body and having a knife-holding head extendable through an opening in the cutting face. The opening has aparallel opposing sides that diverge toward a cutting direction of the utility knife. The knife-holding head has corresponding aparallel opposing sides that cooperate with the sides of the opening to cause a cutting force exerted on the knife-holding head to wedge the blade-holding slide within the opening and thereby stiffen the knife-holding head with respect to the body during operation of the utility knife. In one embodiment of the present invention, the blade-holding slide resiliently urges the knife-holding head to unwedge when the cutting force is removed therefrom.
