Patent number: 4766286Abstract: For use with plasma arc welding apparatus, a control system is set forth. The plasma arc welding apparatus includes a plasma arc power supply (12), a contactor (20), and an electrode assembly for moving the electrode (32) relative to a work piece (22). The electrode assembly is raised or lowered by a drive motor (24). The present apparatus includes plasma arc adapter (48) connected across the power supply to measure the voltage across the plasma arc. The plasma arc adapter forms a DC output signal input to a differential amplifier (60). A second input (58) is defined by an adjustable resistor (56) connected to a DC voltage supply to enable operator control. The differential amplifier forms an output difference signal provided to an adder circuit (64). The adder circuit then connects with a power amplifier (68) which forms the driving signal for the motor.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1987Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Assignee: United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: William F. Patent number: 4766369Abstract: An ice detector 11 is provided for the determination of the thickness of ice 22 on the outer surface 12 on an object (e.g., aircraft 10) independently of temperature or the composition of the ice 22. First capacitive gauge 16, second capacitive gauge 18, and temperature gauge 20 are embedded in embedding material 14 located within a hollowed out portion of outer surface 12. This embedding material 14 is flushed with outer surface 12 to prevent undesirable drag. First capacitive gauge 16, second capacitive gauge 18, and temperature gauge 20 are respectively connected to first capacitance measuring circuit 24, second capacitance measuring circuit 26, and temperature measuring circuit 28. The geometry of first and second capacitive gauges 16 and 18 is such that the ratio of the voltage outputs of first and second capacitance measuring circuits 24 and 26 is proportional to the thickness of ice 22, regardless of ice temperature or composition. This ratio is determined by offset and dividing circuit 29.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1987Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: Leonard M. Patent number: 4761744Abstract: A method and device 15 is provided for a quick, accurate and on-line determination of heats of combustion of gaseous hydrocarbons. First, the amount of oxygen in the carrier stream air is sensed by oxygen sensing system 20. Second, three individual volumetric flow rates of oxygen, carrier stream air, and hydrocarbon test gas are introduced into burner 19. The hydrocarbon test gas is fed into burner 19 at a volumetric flow rate n measured by flowmeter 18. Third, the amount of oxygen in the resulting combustion products is sensed by oxygen sensing system 20. Fourth, the volumetric flow rate of oxygen is adjusted until the amount of oxygen in the combustion product equals the amount of oxygen previously sensed in the carrier stream air. This equalizing volumetric flow rate is m and is measured by flowmeter 16. The heat of combustion of the hydrocarbon test gas is then determined from the ratio m/n.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1986Date of Patent: August 2, 1988Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Jag J. Patent number: 4757315Abstract: A signal is transmitted from a first location to a remote second location where a target carrying a transponder is positioned. The transponder re-radiates the signal to the first location where it is received. A phase comparator generates from the transmitted and received signals a measurement of their phase difference which is functionally related to the distance between the first and second locations. In one embodiment, the transponder is a passive parametric oscillator, being powered by energy received from the transmitted signal, which generates and transmits a subharmonic of the transmitted signal.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1986Date of Patent: July 12, 1988Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Christopher L.
