Abstract: The present disclosure generally pertains to an arrayed media converter (AMC) that has an array of Wavelength Division Multiplexing-Passive Optical Network (WDM-PON) Optical Network Units (ONUs) for terminating an optical channel in the feeder or distribution portion of a telecommunication network. The ONU converts an optical signal from the optical channel into at least one electrical signal for transmission to a customer premises. Thus, the AMC serves as an interface between at least one WDM-PON link and at least one conductive connection, such as a twisted pair. In one exemplary embodiment, the AMC comprises a sealed housing that is environmentally hardened to protect the AMC from environmental conditions, including changes in weather. Such an AMC may be used to provide a robust, cost effective Fiber To The Curb (FTTC) solution, but the AMC may be used at other points within the network, if desired.
Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure generally pertain to systems and methods for providing notifications of hazardous ground conditions in telecommunication equipment. A system in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure comprises a control module positioned within a chassis at a network facility. The control module communicates with a plurality of access modules through a backplane of the chassis. At least one of the modules, such as the control module, comprises a voltage sensing element, control logic, and a user interface. The voltage sensing element is configured to measure a potential voltage difference between chassis ground and digital ground and determine whether such voltage difference is hazardous. The control logic is configured to monitor the voltage sensing element and provide an alarm via the user interface when the hazardous condition is present.
Abstract: A system for provisioning virtual circuit information in packet has a plurality of access modules that are inserted into slots of a chassis at a network facility. Each access module is provisioned with sets of Ethernet virtual circuit (EVC) attribute data in order to provide the access module with sufficient information to handle data packets carried by EVCs serviced by the access module. Rather than manually provisioning each access module with EVC attribute data, the sets of attribute data are stored at a central location. Each access module has logic that is configured to automatically retrieve, from the central location, sets of attribute data associated with the EVCs to be serviced by the access module. The logic then automatically provisions the access module to handle data packets carried by such EVCs.

Abstract: In accordance with a non-limiting example, a dual level surge protector adaptively selects the protection level required in response to any expected voltages that will be applied to the tip and ring lines. In one example, the surge protector has a first set value for responding to an applied battery voltage and a second set value for responding to a combination voltage that includes a battery voltage plus a ringing voltage.
Abstract: The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for compensating for repetitive impulse noise (REIN) affecting signals that are communicated over a telecommunication channel. A system in accordance with one exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure includes a transmitter and receiver that communicate over a telecommunication channel. The data is encoded by the transmitter using a forward error correction (FEC) algorithm, such as Reed-Solomon coding, before being transmitted over a telecommunication channel to the receiver. The REIN tracker analyzes the data received by the receiver in order to predict when future occurrences of REIN will likely affect the data being communicated over the channel. The REIN tracker then marks erasures in a received data stream based on its REIN predictions. A decoder then decodes FEC code words in the data stream based on the marked erasures.

Abstract: Egress of data packets from a packet switch is controlled in a manner that involves adjusting the shaper accumulators only when a packet egress event or accumulator credit threshold event occurs. A timeline having a number of timeslots is maintained in a memory to mark the times at which events are predicted to occur. If an egress event occurs, in which one or more data packets have been sent from a queue, or if the current timeslot contains a marker, then a count stored in an accumulator is adjusted. If an egress event has occurred or a threshold event in which a count stored in an accumulator has crossed a threshold has occurred, then a marker is stored in a future timeslot.

Abstract: A system and method in accordance with a non-limiting aspect minimizes echo return loss in a communications system. The dial tone is broken on an analog telephone line connected to a hybrid circuit having selectable impedance configurations and that interfaces a digital communications circuit and the analog telephone line. A white noise signal as a test call is inserted through the hybrid circuit onto the analog telephone line corresponding to a selected impedance configuration. The returned white noise signal is used for measuring the echo return loss. The test call is dropped. This process is repeated at different impedance configurations to obtain echo return loss measurements at each of the impedance configurations. The optimum impedance setting configuration is determined based on the results and applied to the hybrid circuit and typically set during a running telephone configuration.
Abstract: Logical ports allow multiple customers to be connected to and to receive different services over a common physical port of a packet forwarding device. Such logical ports allow for customer separation and may be created based on VLAN ID and MPLS labels. In one embodiment, each service provided via a packet forwarding device is associated with a unique logical port. The logical port may span multiple physical ports.

Abstract: A correlation optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) system embeds an OTDR signal in a digital data signal that is to be converted into an optical signal and transmitted across an optical fiber to a remote receiver. In particular, the digital data signal is amplitude modulated with the OTDR signal, which is based on a pseudo noise (PN) sequence, such as an M-sequence. The amplitude modulation is relatively small, for example, less than about 10% of the digital data signal's peak amplitude in an effort to limit the OTDR signal's effect on communication performance. A sequence recovery element receives reflections from the optical fiber and converts the reflections to digital samples. Each digital sample from the sequence recovery element is correlated by correlators that respectively correspond to delays and, hence, locations along the optical fiber, and accumulators accumulate the correlation values from the correlators.

Abstract: A communication system utilizes at least one digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) at an intermediate point between a network facility and one or more customer premises. Initially, as few as one DSLAM, may be implemented at the intermediate point, but the system can be expanded to include any number of DSLAMs at the intermediate point. Any of the DSLAMs at the intermediate point can be selectively upgraded at any time to a vectoring solution as may be desired. The use of such DSLAMs provides the network service provider with flexibility in implementing and maintaining the network.

Abstract: The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for cancelling crosstalk in satellite access devices, such as DSLAMs. In one exemplary embodiment, a satellite DSLAM is configured to employ a vectored DSL modulation format, such as vectored VDSL, on both a customer premises (CP) side of the DSLAM and a network side of the DSLAM. For at least one tone communicated by the DSLAM, the DSLAM is configured to maintain a set of coefficients indicative of crosstalk contributions from interferers on both sides of the DSLAM. Based on such coefficients, the DSLAM is configured to cancel crosstalk that couples from one side of the DSLAM to the other.
