  • Patent number: 11631534
Abstract: A superconducting device includes a first superconducting wire configured to carry a first current in a superconducting state, and to generate thermal energy upon occurrence of a hot spot during conduction. The device includes a second superconducting wire, thermally coupled to and electrically isolated from the first superconducting wire. The second superconducting wire is configured to conduct a second current in a superconducting state below, but sufficiently near its critical surface to be quenched to a non-superconducting state upon conduction of the thermal energy from the first superconducting wire.

  • Patent number: 11587701
Abstract: A superconducting device includes a superconducting cable having a plurality of superconducting tapes in a plurality of phases, including a first phase, and at least one further phase. One or more superconducting tapes of the first phase is in electrical contact with one or more superconducting tapes of the at least one further phase through at least one resistive barrier that prevents current from passing between the first phase and the at least one further phase in the absence of a voltage between one or more of the superconducting tapes of the first phase or the at least one further phase. The first phase is electrically connected in series to at least one further phase.

  • Patent number: 11488747
Abstract: A superconducting power cable system includes a superconducting power cable in a first temperature environment separated from a second temperature environment by a thermal barrier. The first temperature environment is an interior of a cryostat and is at a lower temperature than the second temperature environment located outside of the cryostat. At least one superconducting feeder cable has a first end electrically coupled to the superconducting power cable in the first temperature environment, and a second end electrically coupled to a normal conducting current lead in the second temperature environment. Each superconducting feeder cable is a flexible superconducting cable or wire formed of multiple superconducting tapes that are wound in a helical fashion and in multiple layers around a round former.

  • Patent number: 10943712
Abstract: A bundle of superconducting cables employs a plurality of superconducting cables, each having a former and a plurality of superconducting tape conductors wound in at least one layer around the former in a helical fashion. Each superconducting tape conductor has at least one superconducting layer. Each superconducting cable lacks an outer insulating layer and is held in a bundle of cables with each other superconducting cable of the plurality of superconducting cables. A sheath of non-conductive material covers the bundle of cables.

  • Patent number: 9755329
Abstract: Superconducting cable connector structures include a terminal body (or other structure) onto which the tapes from the superconducting cable extend. The terminal body (or other structure) has a diameter that is sufficiently larger than the diameter of the former of the superconducting cable, so that the tapes spread out over the outer surface of the terminal body. As a result, gaps are formed between tapes on the terminal body (or other structure). Those gaps are filled with solder (or other suitable flowable conductive material), to provide a current path of relatively high conductivity in the radial direction. Other connector structures omit the terminal body.

  • Publication number: 20170088382
Abstract: A cable machine system for winding conductive tapes or wires around a cable core includes a rotatable pickup spool for receiving and winding a cable. The system also includes a rotatable shaft having a central passage along its axial length, through which the cable core extends during a winding operation. At least one rotatable conductor spool is rotatable about a spool axis and holds a conductive tape or wire. Each rotatable conductor spool is attached to the rotatable shaft and rotatable about the axis of the rotatable shaft with rotation of the rotatable shaft. A tape or wire extends from each conductor spool to the cable core and is wound around the cable core as the rotatable shaft is rotated about its axis.

  • Patent number: 9093200
Abstract: A superconducting cable and connection structure includes one or more superconducting cables. Each cable has superconducting tapes wound about a former in a plurality of phases. Superconducting tapes of a first phase extends further toward a distal end of each cable end than the superconducting tapes of the second phase. The first and second cable ends of one superconducting cable (or a first end of a first superconducting cable and a second end of a second superconducting cable) are arranged with the first phase of the second cable end electronically coupled to the second phase of the first cable end. Connector structures may couple the cable ends together. The cable(s) form one or more loops within a cryostat, to form a degaussing coil.
