  • Patent number: 6036643
Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system and method are described by which a fundamental frequency signal is transmitted into the body and harmonic (nonlinear) echo returns are received from the transmission. The harmonic echo signals are Doppler processed and displayed. The harmonic Doppler signals may be displayed alone, or in combination with a fundamental frequency or harmonic grayscale image. In a preferred embodiment harmonic signals returned from moving tissue are segmented on an intensity or frequency basis and displayed. The inventive apparatus and method provide highly resolved ultrasonic images of moving tissue which are substantially unobscured by image clutter from structures or tissue in the near field.

  • Patent number: 5846200
Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system is provided for measuring the volume of a chamber of the heart or other organ or vessel. An ultrasonic transducer probe is used to scan the chamber with a plurality of spatially distinct scan planes. The pixels of the chamber volume of each scan plane are aggregated to provide a measure of the volume. In a preferred embodiment the chamber volume pixels are developed from Doppler signals from the fluid within the chamber, and are related to voxels within the chamber by weighting pixels in the scan planes in accordance with the voxel sampling afforded by the inter-plane separation.

  • Patent number: 5762067
Abstract: An ultrasonic endoscopic probe is provided with an articulating distal tip at which and ultrasonic transducer is located. The articulating section of the probe can be locked in an articulated position by a lock control located at a control section of the probe. The locking force is variably selectable by the user, so that the articulating section will be locked in position by a desired force. The articulating section is controlled by cables, which include cable tension adjustments that also serve to delimit the range of articulation. The articulating section is formed of alternating pivot rings with intervening polymeric pivot beads, which provide repetitively smooth articulation. The ultrasonic transducer is rotatable to steer the acoustic scan plane during use, and a sliding membrane between the transducer and its acoustic window allows the transducer to rotate smoothly without sticking.

  • Patent number: 5720291
Abstract: A medical diagnostic ultrasound system is described in which ultrasonic B mode tissue information and Doppler flow information is acquired from a volumetric region of the body and processed together to render a three dimensional image. The three dimensional rendering processes the B mode and Doppler flow information as a function of the spatial location of B mode and Doppler pixels in the volumetric region. The rendering utilizes separate three dimensional rendering parameters for the tissue and flow information, respectively.

  • Patent number: 5718229
Abstract: An ultrasonic imaging system is provided which produces signals representative of tissue motion through amplitude detection of echo signals from which stationary clutter has been removed. Tissue motion may be distinguished from noise and flow signals on the basis of the dynamic range of the detected signals. The tissue motion signals may be displayed in combination with B mode signals to augment images of moving tissue, or in a two dimensional image in combination with B mode and Doppler image information. A sequence of gated tissue motion images of the heart may be displayed with each image of a different phase of the heart cycle displayed in a different color. The sequence may be played in a real time sequence, or the images accumulated in a common static image which overlay and hence mask one another, thereby revealing subtle differences in motion from one phase of the heart cycle to another.

  • Patent number: 5648942
Abstract: A two phase composite acoustic backing for an ultrasonic transducer array is formed of a first composite material which is electrically conductive and relatively attenuative to acoustic energy and forms a plurality of isolated conductive paths between individual elements of the array and the back side of said backing. The isolated conductive paths are surrounded by an acoustic kerf filler material which is non-conductive and is either attenuative to acoustic energy, exhibits a low acoustic impedance, or both. The resulting two phase composite acoustic backing thus attenuates ultrasonic energy which enters the backing from the transducer elements, both in the conductive paths and in the surrounding kerf filler material, while affording points of electrical attachment to cable wires for the array which are removed from the piezoelectric material.
