Publication number: 20150369573Abstract: An explosives detonator system includes a detonator housing within which is provided a detonation circuit that includes a conductive pathway having a fuse head integrated therewith such that the conductive pathway passes along both electrodes and a resistive bridge of the fuse head. An uncharged chargeable voltage source is also integrated with the detonation circuit and is electrically sensitive to a charging property which is included in a charging signal. Exposure to the charging property charges the voltage source, thereby rendering it capable of generating a potential difference between the electrodes at least to equal the breakdown voltage of the resistive bridge. The charging property is any one or more of a charging light pulse, a charging temperature, a charging pressure and a charging radio frequency.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2015Publication date: December 24, 2015Applicant: AEL Mining Services LimitedInventors: Elmar Muller, Pieter Stephanus Jacobus Halliday, Clifford Gordon Morgan, Paul Dastoor, Warwick Belcher, Xiaojing Zhou, Glenn Bryant

Patent number: 8857339Abstract: An explosives detonator system for detonating an explosive charge with which it is, in use, arranged in a detonating relationship is provided. On acceptance of a detonation initiating signal having a detonation initiating property, the system initiates and thus detonates the explosive charge. The system includes an initiating device which accepts the detonation initiating signal and initiates and thus detonates the explosive charge. The initiating device is initially in a non-detonation initiating condition, in which it is not capable of accepting the detonation initiating signal.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2011Date of Patent: October 14, 2014Assignee: AEL Mining Services LimitedInventors: Elmar Muller, Pieter Stephanus Jacobus Halliday, Clifford Gordon Morgan, Paul Dastoor, Warwick Belcher, Xiaojing Zhou, Glenn Bryant

Publication number: 20130255520Abstract: An explosives detonator system for detonating an explosive charge with which it is, in use, arranged in a detonating relationship is provided. On acceptance of a detonation initiating signal having a detonation initiating property, the system initiates and thus detonates the explosive charge. The system includes an initiating device which accepts the detonation initiating signal and initiates and thus detonates the explosive charge. The initiating device is initially in a non-detonation initiating condition, in which it is not capable of accepting the detonation initiating signal. The system also includes a radio frequency identification (RFID) based switching device that detects a switching property of a radio switching signal that is transmitted to the detonator system and switches the initiating device, on detection of the detonation initiating property, to a standby condition in which the initiating device is capable of operatively accepting the detonation initiating signal when it is transmitted thereto.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 9, 2011Publication date: October 3, 2013Applicant: AEL Mining Services LimitedInventors: Elmar Muller, Pieter Stephanus Jacobus Halliday, Clifford Gordon Morgan, Paul Dastoor, Warwick Belcher, Xiaojing Zhou, Glenn Bryant

Patent number: 8342609Abstract: An open cast mining method includes sinking a blasting borehole (14) for receiving an explosive charge into a ground body (12) which is to be mined, taking an initial measurement of one or more borehole conditions, including at least a temperature inside a bottom half (14.1) of the borehole (14), and loading the borehole (14) with a base explosive charge (28) only if the initial measurement of all of the one or more measured borehole conditions are within predefined limits indicating that the borehole (14) will not be subject to uncontrolled detonation of the base explosive charge (28). The one or more borehole conditions, including at least said temperature, are further measured and monitored after the base explosive charge (28) has been loaded. An alarm signal external of the borehole (14) is provided if any of the one or more measured borehole conditions are not within predefined limits so that there is a risk of uncontrolled detonation of the explosive charge (28).Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 2010Date of Patent: January 1, 2013Assignee: AEL Mining Services LimitedInventors: Robert James Holdcroft, Neville Robert Marillier, Derek Luke Anthony, Andre Pienaar

Patent number: 8261664Abstract: A system (10) for loading a flowable explosive into blast holes includes a mobile explosives supply unit (12) having at least one explosives feed line for feeding a flowable explosive from the supply unit (12) into a blast hole, a global positioning system (GPS) unit (14) operable to determine the position of a blast hole, and a blast hole identification processor (16) in communication with the GPS unit (14) operable to receive from the GPS unit (14) a blast hole co-ordinate position. The processor (16) is configured or programmed uniquely to identify the blast hole based on the co-ordinate position of the blast hole.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2008Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: AEL Mining Services LimitedInventors: Horst Wolfgang Friedrich Von Lengeling, Ewan James Sellers, Mauritz Kotze, Peter Robert Wight

Patent number: 8118956Abstract: A method of manufacturing a pyrotechnic time delay composition includes admixing together a solid oxidizer, a solid fuel and water to form an aqueous slurry. The slurry is transformed into droplets. The droplets are gas-dried to form particles comprising the oxidizer and the fuel, with the particles thus constituting a pyrotechnic delay composition.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2007Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Assignee: AEL Mining Services LimitedInventors: Clifford Gordon Morgan, Craig Rimmington
