  • Patent number: 9725100
Abstract: A railcar hatch cover assembly having a cover, a latch engaging structure, a latch coupled to the cover, and a handle coupled to the latch. The handle is configured to be grasped by an operator. When a substantially vertical force is applied to the handle, it moves the latch from a latched position to an unlatched position and moves the cover from a closed position to an open position. When the cover is dropped from the open position to the closed position, the latch contacts the latch engaging structure and moves from the unlatched position to the latched position. A railcar latch assembly having a latch coupled to the cover and a handle coupled to the latch. The latch has an arcuate bottom surface that contacts the latch engaging structure to move the latch from an unlatched position to a latched position.

  • Patent number: 9073557
Abstract: A railcar hatch cover assembly having at least first and second covers each moveable between an open position and a closed position. First and second gears are mounted to the first and second covers, respectively. Third and fourth gears are mounted to a shaft that rotates between first, second, third, and fourth positions in sequence. The third gear is engaged with the first gear as the shaft rotates from the first position to the third position, and the fourth gear is engaged with the second gear as the shaft rotates from the second position to the fourth position. As the shaft rotates from the second position to the third position, the first cover assists in rotating the shaft and opening the second cover. • Patent number: 7124693
Abstract: An outlet gate assembly has upper and lower gate assemblies with independent drive mechanisms to open and close the gates. The drive mechanisms may be rack and pinion drives. The racks for the lower gate do not enter the gate cavity. The outlet gate assembly can be used for vacuum, gravity or pneumatic sled discharge. The vacuum openings are offset from the center plane of the discharge area to allow free flow of lading. The lower gate assembly includes surfaces that cover and protect the lowermost horizontal surfaces of the assembly when the lower gate assembly is closed. Thus, no separate mud plate is needed. The outlet gate assembly includes seals made of an ultra high molecular weight polymer.

  • Patent number: 6092471
Abstract: An actuator automatically opens and closes the covers of a railroad hopper car as the car enters a loading/unloading station. The opening actuator includes a support frame disposed along a railroad track at the station that extends upwardly above the railroad car as it enters the station. An actuator bar is carried by the support frame and extends fore-and-aft of the railroad car adjacent the top thereof. The bar has an inclined unlatching segment for engagement by the latch arms of the covers to raise the arms and release the latches as the car passes thereunder, an intermediate substantially horizontally extending segment and a lifting segment for thereafter opening the covers as the car passes beneath the bar. The closing actuator includes a second support frame disposed along the track that extends upwardly above the car once unloaded. A closing bar is carried by the second frame and extends fore-and-aft of the empty car adjacent the top thereof.

  • Patent number: 6085664
Abstract: A vented hatch cover for a container having an opening defining a hatch and a coaming on the container's exterior surrounding the hatch opening. The cover has an outer shell and an inner shell, each shell having a main body and a flanged portion. The bodies are sized to fit over and enclose the hatch opening. The flanged portions are bonded together and extend radially outwardly from the corresponding bodies to fixedly couple and hold the bodies of the inner and outer shells in a spaced relationship to present an air chamber therebetween. Balsa reinforcement members are spaced apart and fixed between the shells in a radial pattern within the air chamber to provide support to the cover without interfering with the air flow. Air inlets are formed through the flange and body of the inner shell to allow air flow from the container's exterior into the container via the air chamber.
