  • Patent number: 5700092
Abstract: An integrated spindle shaft and the like and self-compensating hydrostatic bearing assembly, obviating the need for external bearing sleeve constructions, in which a cylindrical bearing bore is so provided having circumferential grooves connected to pressure supply and drain systems, and in which collection space pressure supply and fluid drain grooves are provided that cooperate with circumferential collector grooves and pockets, such that when fluid flows axially from the pressure groove areas across the shaft into the collector grooves, in proportion to the radial clearance between the shaft surface and the bore, in conjunction to the pocket opposite to the collector groove, to provide a restoring force in proportion to the radial displacement of the shaft.

  • Patent number: 5683118
Abstract: A novel flexural kinematic fluid or electrical coupling in which a pair of components is deterministically kinematically coupled with repeatable accuracy of positioning with respect to one another by the use of three spherical surfaces on one component, and three grooves in the other component, and with holes passing through one component through the contact zones between the spherical surface-to-groove contact points and out through the other component. For electrical contact, instead of fluid flow holes at the Hertzian interface, electrical contact pads are used.

  • Patent number: 5678944
Abstract: A novel flexural mount kinematic coupling apparatus and technique in which a pair of surfaces is deterministically kinematically coupled with repeatable accuracy of positioning with respect to one another and an intermediate plane between, and with guided compliance provided by flexural, rolling or sliding bearing elements to permit translational clamping in a direction normal to the plane that brings the surfaces into contact without positional error motions between the surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5674032
Abstract: An integrated tooling system and technique wherein the tool shaft serves as its own spindle and is provided on its surface with hydrostatic bearing grooves for permitting spinning within a supporting bore, and with the shaft connected at its rear end internally with a driving fluid turbine to form an in-line integrated high speed high power tooling system.

  • Patent number: 5667204
Abstract: An economic and efficient method for providing an inner constrained layer damping system to a tubular structure by inserting an inner damping tube that has been substantially slit along its length at several places around its circumference and then wrapped in a viscoelastic tape to cover the slits, or just plain tape to just cover the slits, with a viscoelastic layer thereupon with the tape inserted within and coextensively along the inside of the outer structural beam to be damped, and with the space between the two filled with a replicating material such as epoxy, cement grout, rubber, or other pourable or injectable material, which must have high shear damping properties if the latter tape-just- covering-the-slit option is used, to couple in shear the outer structural beam to the inner slit damping tube and cause shear strains to be transmitted across the viscoelastic boundary between the two tubes.

  • Patent number: 5533814
Abstract: A novel means for the design of a spindle having a shaft provided with a hydrostatic bearing end surface for resisting axial thrust force upon the end surface, the hydrostatic bearing being a self-compensating beating mounted circumferentially about the shaft near the end surface and having a fluid pressure supply groove providing fluid for the self-compensating bearing, the bearing being mounted upon an axially extending member one end of which serves as part of the end surface of the shaft and the other end of which serves as a reverse thrust surface, along with means for flowing fluid from the pressure supply groove radially across said reverse thrust end surface and through an opening extending axially between the reverse thrust end surface, and the end surface of the shaft, opposing the thrust force with pressure proportional to the axial position of the shaft and related to the degree of fluid compensation in the bearing.
