  • Patent number: 4473736
Abstract: A plasma generator comprises a metallic tube of small diameter inside which can circulate a gas such as argon at a small flow rate, which is discharged at the front end of the tube. The tube is coupled with an energizing structure which can comprise a frequency generator supplying electromagnetic microwaves, via a coaxial connection, a coupling structure allowing the transfer of the energy of the generator to the front portion of the metallic tube. In the absence of a gas current in the tube, the front portion radiates the energy transmitted to it in the manner of an antenna. When a gas is discharged at the end of the tube, said energy allows maintaining a plasma in front of the latter. This plasma generator device is usable in many applications, such as a blowtorch a light source or torch usable in spectrography, a plasma motor or an ion source.

  • Patent number: 4458245
Abstract: The length and width of fissures in a bore hole is determined by alternately flowing liquid into and out of the formation from an isolated zone of a bore hole, at different frequencies, and measuring the dynamic pressure of the flowing fluid. The length of fissures in the isolated zone is determined from frequency peaks at high pressure to flow ratios, and the thickness of the fissures is determined from variations of pressure-flow ratios with frequency by comparison with known data. Sonde apparatus for practicing the method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4435347
Abstract: A method for forming articles such as crates in which sides of the crate extend generally perpendicular to the base of the crate. The method includes forming a layer of loose binder coated wood particles, precompressing selected portions of the layer which form the sides of the crate, bending the precompressed portions upwardly, inserting the so formed layer in a mould and compressing the layer in the mould to form the desired article. The initial layer can be slightly compressed to hold the particles together and the base of the article can also be slightly precompressed but to a lesser extent than the portions which form the sides.

  • Patent number: 4432295
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for processing rectangular pieces of fabric wherein the piece of fabric is moved in a first direction until the front edge reaches and is held in a predetermined front position, whereas the remaining part of said piece continues to move in said first direction until the rear edge reaches and is held in a predetermined rear position. The piece is thereafter moved in a second position while the front and rear edges are kept apart at a predetermined distance, and the aforesaid edges are hemmed simultaneously by hemming machines. The method and device according to the invention are used for hemming pieces having two parallel edges, and in particular rectangular pieces cut from a continuous web of fabric, such as for example floor cloths.

  • Patent number: 4399381
Abstract: In a homopolar dynamoelectric machine in which a magnetic flux moves across a generally cylindrical clearance space between the stator and rotor, counterproductive magnetic fields produced by axial electric currents are avoided by providing, on the mutually confronting surfaces of the stator and rotor, nonmagnetic electrical conductors which are electrically insulated from the magnetic portions of the stator and rotor. The conductors are connected together electrically by contacts, providing an electrically conductive loop which encloses no magnetic members. Leads from the electrically conductive loop may be connected to an external circuit. The electrical conductors in one embodiment are of solid cylindrical shape, and in other embodiments are formed of spaced bars as in a squirrel cage. When spaced bars are used, the bars on one member are axially oriented and the bars on the other member are arranged in two sets which are equally but oppositely inclined to the machine axis.

Abstract: The anchor comprises a shank and a rocker which is mounted in the vicinity of one end of the shank to pivot about an axis perpendicular to the shank and to the rocker and which has two equal branches constituting the arms of the anchor. Each arm carries at its free end a ploughshare whose convergent end portion faces the other end of the shank. The convex faces of the two ploughshares are disposed in confronting relation. In operation, the anchor operates in the same way as conventional so-called "plough" anchors in hard grounds, whereas the two ploughshares sink into and simultaneously operate in very soft grounds.
