Patent number: 6152998Abstract: An automatic filter cartridge in accordance with the present invention includes a frame which is formed with an aperture and an elongated filter medium which is attached to a supply roller and a take-up roller. Specifically, the supply and take-up rollers are placed into respective supply and take-up containers which are mounted on the frame across the aperture. The frame is then positioned in the ducting of an air conditioning system to filter the airflow through the filter medium which extends across the aperture. To monitor the airflow through the ducting, the automatic filter cartridge can further include a computer. With this configuration, a sensor is positioned in the ducting to monitor the airflow through the ducting. When the sensor indicates the filter medium in the ducting is dirty, the computer activates a motor to rotate the take-up roller.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1999Date of Patent: November 28, 2000Assignee: Federal Air Conditioning Technologies, Inc.Inventor: James Eric Taylor

Patent number: 6128910Abstract: An apparatus and method for noninvasively diagnosing a closed air refrigeration system includes a sensing unit which can be selectively placed over the evaporator inlet duct and the evaporator outlet duct to respectively measure the evaporator inlet enthalpy and the evaporator outlet enthalpy. Using both of these enthalpies, a computer calculates a sensible heat ratio for the evaporator which is useable to diagnose the system. Similarly, the sensing unit can be selectively placed over the condenser intake and condenser exhaust to measure the condenser intake enthalpy and the condenser exhaust enthalpy. Using these enthalpies, the computer calculates a sensible heat ratio for the condenser which is useable to further diagnose the system. Further, superheat and subcool set points can be calculated and compared with rated set points to evaluate the system. In an alternate embodiment, separate sensing units can be used simultaneously to measure the various enthalpies.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1997Date of Patent: October 10, 2000Assignee: Federal Air Conditioning Technologies, Inc.Inventor: John E. Patent number: 6015270Abstract: A two stage compressor or pump with integral electronically controlled multiphase linear motor incorporates a cup shaped moving piston as a stator. The linear motor body has an intake head with valve fitted at the end adjacent to the closed end of the cup shaped piston. A discharge head with a central discharge tube extending into the hollow center of the cup shaped moving piston is fitted to the opposite end of the motor body. As the piston reciprocates it draws the working fluid in through the intake valve, compresses and transfers it through an interstage valve in the closed end of the moving piston into a second variable volume chamber formed by the inside of the cup shaped piston and the discharge tube which acts as a fixed piston, and then further compresses and transfers it out through a valve in the discharge tube. While the design is particularly well suited for use as a compressor in air conditioning and refrigeration systems, it can also be used as a pump.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1997Date of Patent: January 18, 2000Assignee: Air Conditioning TechnologiesInventor: Bruce A. Patent number: 5955682Abstract: An air sampling system includes a chamber that is formed with an exhaust port and a plurality of intake ports. A plurality of air collector arms are each attached in fluid communication with a respective intake port of the chamber. Further, each collector arm is formed with an inlet slot and an air channel which establishes fluid communications between the inlet slot and the respective chamber intake port. All of the collector arms extend outwardly from the chamber so that their respective inlet slots lie in a first plane. Relative to the inlet slots, the exhaust port of the chamber lies in a second plane that is substantially parallel to the first plane. Accordingly, a portion of the air that passes through the first plane toward the second plane, enters the inlet slots of the collector arms and is diverted into the chamber. In the chamber the diverted air is redirected out the exhaust port.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1997Date of Patent: September 21, 1999Assignee: Federal Air Conditioning Technologies, Inc.Inventor: John E.
