  • Patent number: 6472869
Abstract: A diode laser-pumped magnetometer includes a diode laser that emits a polarized pumping laser beam with resonant optical radiation; and a K-cell through which a magnetic field is manifested from an independent source, the K-cell containing atoms with a dipole experiencing a torque due to the magnetic field. The atoms are excited by the resonant optical radiation of the pumping laser beam and periodically emitting a response radiation as they return to ground state such that the response radiation includes photons that indicate one unit of angular momentum indicative of the torque due to the magnetic field. Finally, a photodetector serves as a means for measuring the response radiation of the K-cell to indicate thereby a measure of the magnetic field in the K-cell from the independent magnetic source.

  • Patent number: 6468446
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for preparing gaseous compositions comprising a metal carbonyl, preferably at ppm concentration, are disclosed. The methods comprise placing metal, preferably in the form of filings, of the metal carbonyl to be produced into a first test vessel at a first temperature, and then pressurizing the first test vessel with a gas comprising carbon monoxide from a carbon monoxide source vessel. The contents of the first vessel are then heated to a second temperature and at a rate sufficient to initiate metal carbonyl formation, thereby forming a gas composition comprising a metal carbonyl. The reaction is then quenched by transferring some of the gas composition comprising a metal carbonyl from the first test vessel to a second test vessel which is at a third temperature, the third temperature being lower than the second temperature. Finally, the gas composition is diluted in the second test vessel with an inert gas (preferably argon) from an inert gas source container.

  • Patent number: 6467306
Abstract: A process and apparatus for separating carbon monoxide and hydrogen from a gaseous mixture thereof. The process comprises separating a cooled and partially condensed stream of feed gas comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen into hydrogen-rich vapor and carbon monoxide-rich liquid. A portion of the carbon monoxide-rich liquid is at least partially stripped of hydrogen in a hydrogen stripping column, having an operating pressure below the feed pressure to produce hydrogen-stripped carbon monoxide liquid and hydrogen-enriched carbon monoxide vapor. A further portion of the carbon monoxide-rich liquid or a stream derived therefrom is vaporized to provide refrigeration for the feed gas. The vaporized carbon monoxide-rich liquid is compressed in a compressor to below the feed pressure, cooled and partially condensed by heat exchange and at least a portion is recycled to the hydrogen stripping column.
