Patents Assigned to Akzona, Inc.
  • Patent number: 4442022
Abstract: The present invention relates to a photopolymerizable composition comprising a polymerizable, polyethylenically unsaturated compound, benzil and/or fluorenone, a specific biphenyl ketone such as para-phenyl benzophenone, and a reducing agent such as a tertiary amine. The present composition permits rapid and complete curing. Moreover, in the photopolymerization of compounds sensitive to air inhibition non-tacky surfaces are obtained. The effect observed is based on a synergism between the present photoinitiators. The advantages of the invention are most manifest in curing relatively thick layers of materials.

  • Patent number: 4425445
Abstract: A method for the manufacture of polyisocyanurate foams which comprises blending a "B" side with an "A" side comprising an isocyanate. The "B" side comprises a diol, an amine/quaternary ammonium borate ester blend, a surfactant, a blowing agent, and a metal catalyst whose weight does not exceed 1.5% of the total weight of the "B" side. The "B" side remains a homogeneous liquid for at least seven days without the need for agitation and the foam formed by this method has a friability not exceeding 30%.

  • Patent number: 4422879
Abstract: An improved inversion process for the preparation of a paper sizing agent which is an aqueous dispersion containing a high content of free rosin in the form of fortified rosin and/or non-fortified rosin, water, and an anionic dispersing agent is disclosed. The improvement comprises using as the dispersing agent a polyethoxylated, sulfated rosin or a derivative thereof. There is also disclosed an aqueous dispersion useful as a paper sizing agent comprising from about 10 to about 60% of fortified and/or non-fortified rosin, from about 1 to about 10% of a polyethoxylated, sulfated rosin or a derivative thereof, based on the total weight of all solids in the dispersion, and a sufficient amount of water to form a dispersion.

  • Patent number: 4362645
Abstract: Novel and stable compositions of matter are disclosed which change color sharply upon a transition from a liquid state to a solid state or from a solid state to a liquid state, which change of state is at substantially a predetermined temperature corresponding to a temperature to be measured. The constituents of the novel compositions of matter comprise:1. a solvent (I) consisting of a single substance or a mixture of substances and adapted to change from a solid state at substantially a predetermined temperature to a liquid state and2. an indicator system (II) consisting of one or more substances different from (I), characterized in that(a) (II) is soluble in (I) when the latter is in the liquid phase, and(b) (II) changes color visible to the naked eye when (I) passes from the solid to the liquid phase or from the liquid to the solid phase.Thermometers containing said stable compositions of matter are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4171402
Abstract: Multifilament synthetic polymer yarn is texturized by passing the yarn in a gas stream to a diffuser zone to cause the gas to expand and the yarn filaments to splay open. The yarn filaments are then separated from the expanding gas stream towards a continuous smooth side wall surface defining one end of a bulking chamber. At this end of the chamber the filaments are impacted with each other and the smooth wall surface to form a compact yarn mass. This yarn mass is pushed into and through a slotted portion of the bulking chamber. Simultaneously the gas passes through the yarn mass initially formed in the chamber and then discharges laterally from this mass as it is pushed into the slotted portion.
