    Abstract: A vial adapter having a needle-free valve, a sharpened cannula used to perforate a vial's rubber stopper, and a circular array of claws of different lengths to engage vial closures of different diameters. The array of claws includes a first set of claws each having a first length extending inwardly from the periphery of the housing of the adapter and a second set of claws alternating with the first set of claws and each having a longer length. The second set of claws are mounted so that they deflect and plastically deform out of the way in the case where the adapter is engaged with a vial that exceeds a predetermined size. The housing includes a shroud that is at least as long as the sharpened cannula to protect medical personnel who use the adapter from inadvertent punctures. The needle-free valve includes a resiliently deformable piston element with a naturally open bore. The interior of the piston provides a fluid flow path through the adapter.

    Abstract: A needless valve is described which avoids the suctioning problems of the prior needleless devices upon deactivation and which preferably provides a positive self-purging effect. The valve is self-purging at the end of an administration cycle, avoiding clogging of attached catheters or other devices, and ensures that substantially all of liquid received into the valve is delivered to the receiver. The valve is also extremely simple in design and easy to construct and assemble, since it consists of only three pieces. The valve has a base with a connector for fluid communication attachment to tubing or other device, a solid elongated fluid channeling rod, and an internal fluid flow conduit; a flexible hollow expandable and contractible plug fitting over and moveable along the rod; and a tubular housing fitting over the plug and attached to the base.

    Abstract: A slide clamp includes a slot formed in a plate though which a fluid tube is mounted. The tube may be moved to a flow section of the slot or to an occluding section of the slot. Interconnecting the flow and occluding sections is a pinch zone in which the slot is narrower than the occluding section. Because of this narrow slot, the pinch zone resists movement of the tube from either the occluding or the flow sections into another section. The pinch zone includes a pair of curved beams that are formed as a result of apertures formed in the plate at locations laterally outward from the slot of the pinch zone. As a tube is forced from the occluding section to the flow section the curved beams flex outwardly permitting the tube to pass. However, if enough force is not applied to the tube, it will not overcome the curved beams and they will stop movement of the tube. After the tube has passed, the curved beams resiliently return to their rest position once again providing a stop.

    Abstract: A motor control system that reduces noise while reducing power requirements but providing sufficient torque. A one-phase-on drive mode modified to microstep between “one phase on” positions is used to accelerate the motor in a non-linear manner to a maximum speed. The microstep drive modes have a constant period, and the step rate of the motor is increased by decreasing the number of microsteps in succeeding steps of the motor. A modified full step waveform maintains the motor at the maximum speed, where the current to one winding of the step motor changes polarity within one motor step while the other remains approximately constant providing increased smoothness in the drive and reduced noise. The polarity changes in accordance with the inductance and the compliance voltage of the motor.

    Abstract: A magnetic automatic stop valve formed in a container of a medical fluid administration system has one magnetic element located in a float and another magnetic element located proximate a valve seat. As the fluid level in the container decreases, the magnetic field established between the float and the valve seat eventually overcomes the buoyancy of the float in the fluid and attracts the float into the valve seat at which position the flow of fluid from the container is stopped. The float is formed of two identical halves each of which has one half of an internal post. When joined together to make the float, the internal post is fully formed and extends from one end of the float to the other. One magnetic element is slid over the post during manufacture and is free to slide from one end of the float to the other.

    Abstract: A fluid infusion pump includes a platen between an outer door and the pumping mechanism. The platen is located so that as the outer door of the pump is moved to the closed position, it moves the platen to position the fluid flow tube into occlusive contact with the pumping mechanism before the platen engages a flow stop formed integrally with the tube and releases the flow stop to permit fluid flow, thus avoiding a free flow condition. The door also includes a handle having a sear with a hook that engages the flow stop when the door is in the closed position. As the door is opened, the hook moves the flow stop to the occluded position before the platen is moved away from the tube thus preventing a free flow condition. The platen includes a flow stop release portion that is offset from the remainder of the platen that operatively engages a release tab on the flow stop to permit movement of the flow stop to the fluid flow configuration.
