Patent number: 10217370Abstract: A method of establishing a runway approach procedure for an aircraft at a selected runway, comprises, for obstacles in the final approach segment of the flightpath and having obstacle range values greater than the datum range, calculating a missed approach surface height at a projected intersection of a missed approach surface with a descending vertical error budget surface and a corresponding Distance to Height of Missed Approach Surface from the runway (DHMAS). For obstacles in the final approach segment and having obstacle range values less than the datum range, a missed approach surface height and a corresponding DHMAS are calculated using ascending climb gradient requirements. All DHMAS values are compared, and a controlling obstacle is determined as the obstacle having a greatest DHMAS. A decision altitude for the controlling obstacle is calculated, and the runway approach procedure is updated with the decision altitude. Relativistic metadata other obstacles can also be calculated and stored.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2016Date of Patent: February 26, 2019Assignee: Alaska Airlines, Inc.Inventor: Matthew B. King

Patent number: 9618118Abstract: An air seal assembly for an aircraft control surface comprises a bulb-type air seal, a mounting bracket and a fastener. The bulb-type air seal has a hollow bulb portion, a T-shaped mounting extension, and a first through hole extending through the T-shaped mounting extension. The mounting bracket has a T-shaped channel configured to slidingly receive the T-shaped mounting extension of the air seal and a second through hole. The fastener has a head at one end and an opposite exposed end sized for extending through the first through hole in the T-shaped mounting extension and through the second through hole in the mounting bracket. The exposed end is accessible to tighten the fastener against the bracket to keep the air seal in place within the T-shaped channel.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2014Date of Patent: April 11, 2017Assignee: Alaska Airlines, Inc.Inventors: Scott Robert Foster, Eiji Sugi, Harold Demarest, Jr.

Publication number: 20160225200Abstract: A method for improving fuel economy on a passenger jet aircraft comprises automatically receiving a communication from the aircraft to a ground station comprising at least one subsystem operating parameter measured during the current flight, detecting whether the operating parameter meets predetermined criteria and, if the criteria are met, automatically sending a communication to indicate the aircraft's status for a next flight. If the criteria are not met, a status of the aircraft is automatically changed and a communication is sent. Other methods and systems are also described.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2016Publication date: August 4, 2016Applicant: Alaska Airlines, Inc.Inventors: Shawn Shelley, Kevin Collins, George A. Publication number: 20150025920Abstract: A method for improving boarding of passengers and baggage onto a flight, comprises, at a predetermined time before the scheduled departure of the flight, determining an eligible carry-on baggage items count of carry-on baggage items eligible for treatment as checked baggage items. The eligible carry-on baggage items count is based on predetermined criteria comprising at least one of an aircraft type for the flight, a passenger load factor for the flight and carrier historical data relevant to the flight. If the eligible carry-on items count is greater than zero, then an offer to a passenger on the flight to have the passenger's carry-on baggage item treated as a checked baggage item is communicated, and the passenger's communication in response to the offer is received. For each accepted offer, decrementing the eligible carry-on items count.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 17, 2014Publication date: January 22, 2015Applicant: ALASKA AIRLINES, INC.Inventors: Sandra Lynn Stelling, Brian Wendell Robey, Jerry Allen Tolzman, HerngChuan Michael Yu, Van Gia Bao, Benjamin Michael Casad, Marshall Scott Allen, Zachary Allen Anderson, Brandon Murray Cooper

Patent number: 7086591Abstract: An improved airport check-in system includes a central conveyor and a plurality of outwardly-extending conveyors. Airline agents operate workstations adjacent the outwardly extending conveyors, which are accessible by passengers so that passengers can deposit their own bags directly onto the conveyors. A number of electronic kiosks are provided to obtain boarding passes having encoded passenger information. Check-in is accomplished in two steps, including first obtaining a boarding pass and then proceeding to a baggage check station to check bags. At the baggage check station, the boarding pass is scanned to quickly retrieve key information that would otherwise have been gathered verbally, hastening the check-in process.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 2003Date of Patent: August 8, 2006Assignee: Alaska Airlines, Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey L.
