  • Patent number: 4541336
Abstract: In the operation of a multi-color printing press an accurate and at the same time economic control of the inking of the printing plate or the like is made possible by converting the optical frequencies of light reflectance from inking zones (i.e. the zones controlled by the different fountain keys or the like) of the products printed on the press into representative acoustic frequencies which may be processed by electronic signal processing circuitry. The conversion of the light reflectance (diffusely reflected light from the printed image) into acoustic frequencies is undertaken by a light-pressure transducer with a microphone whose electrical output signal goes to a variable frequency filter means with a scan function such that narrow frequency sub-ranges are produced that are processed spectrally in keeping with the intensity thereof.

  • Patent number: 4512506
Abstract: In a staple wire supply system for use in connection with printing machinery or the like and of the sort having a fixed wire guide pipe past whose outlet end a knife is moved for cutting the wire down to the size needed for stapling, the time needed for the operation of changing over to a new reel of wire when one reel has run out may be greatly cut down by so designing the system that two reels may be supported thereon at a time and having a unit for running one wire from one such reel to the guide pipe and guiding the other wire into a ready or waiting position. Between this unit and the guide pipe there are two wire driving parts, such as pinch rollers acting on opposite sides of a capstan, which may be changed over in direction and may be used for moving wire from the two reels in oposite directions at the time of reel changing.

  • Patent number: 4487408
Abstract: In connection with a unit for parallelizing a chain of overlapping printed products such as signatures (that is to say causing the leading edges to be parallel), delivered by way of a fan wheel onto a delivery belt thereunder, the purpose of the invention is to make for trouble-free operation, to see that the signatures are completely regularly placed, and to make upkeep work on the unit simple. For this purpose, the unit has at least one driver which is moved along at a higher speed than the signatures so as to come up against the trailing edge of each signature as its leading edge comes onto the delivery belt. The driver is moved along a line of motion in such a way that at least part of such motion is directed out of the transport plane of the delivery belt. The driver may be a simple kicking edge of a part fixed to a driver support.

  • Patent number: 4477066
Abstract: The invention has to do with conveying systems for folded products coming from a folder and each made up of sheets which are overlapped so that their unoverlapped edges are sticking out sideways. For pulling the overlapped sheets out sideways and separating them, the apparatus has two gripping means moving along the sides of the system, each gripping means having a gripping gap for taking up said edges. One gripping means is placed at an angle to the direction of conveying for pulling the sheets out to the side. The gripping means are made up of belts or pulleys running at an equal speed and with a gap between them for the edges. One useful effect of the apparatus is that it is not necessary to keep to any fixed spacing between the products in their direction of transport.

  • Patent number: 4465544
Abstract: In connection with an apparatus for putting paste on a moving printed paper web in strips at a right angle to the direction of motion of the web by moving the web between a pasting cylinder and a web support part on the other side of the web, one purpose of the invention is to make certain that the strips of paste may be put on at a high speed and to have such a design that the upkeep work on the apparatus is simple and may be done quickly. To make this possible, the pasting cylinder is made up of cylinder body and a paster roll placed within it so that a limited area of its outer face is uncovered by an axial slot in the outer face of the body. The paster roll has one or more wells stretching along it that are topped up with paste at a point within the pasting cylinder body, while the parts of the outer face of the roll between the wells are stripped and kept clear of the paste.

  • Patent number: 4453464
Abstract: In a printing press such as a rotogravure press having cylinder which frequently has to be changed and which is joined up with a driving shaft by way of a clutch, more rational changing of the cylinder is made possible by designing the clutch in the form of a housing, joined with the driving shaft, and of a pin (coaxially fixed to the end of the cylinder) within the housing, that has a collet-like bush within it which takes up the pin and may be caused to undergo contraction and expansion for gripping and freeing the pin within it. To this end there is a stack of frustoconical washers placed on the bush. This stack may be acted upon by a spring unit in an axial direction while the opposite end of the stack is supported. For freeing the stack from the force of the spring unit and so letting expansion of the bush take place, the spring unit may be acted upon by a piston and pushed clear of the stack. On the opposite side of the piston there is a piston working space into which driving fluid may be run.

  • Patent number: 4426074
Abstract: A switch system for clearing spoiled items from an overlapped stream of paper products such as signatures has a three-flight conveyor belt transporting system whose middle flight may be rocked bodily so that its downstream belt support roll, functioning as a switch roll, is moved between an upper position in which it is leveled up with the next flight, and a lowered position for sending the stream, when made up of spoiled items, downwards under the next flight to a separate delivery. The side face of the upstream belt roll of this same next flight is covered by a cover for neatly separating the stream and switching it over into the downward parts under this next flight. Over the switch a backer roll is placed so as to have its weight supported on the stream of products (in turn supported by the switch roll). In this way the products are well gripped and controlled.
