  • Patent number: 6152017
Abstract: A piston (10) comprises a piston shaft (16) and an essentially cylindrical upper region (14). The piston shaft (16) essentially comprises two opposite shaft wall portions (16) relative to the pin axis. Two pin hubs (24) are also set back relative to the piston axis in the direction of the diameter of the piston shaft (16). On the piston are formed two communicating walls (18) which connect the shaft wall portions (16), which are also set back, which extend as far as the lower edge of the essentially cylindrical region (14) and in which the pin hubs (24) are located. According to the invention, the shaft wall portions (16) are provided in a largely concurrent manner with a dimension in the circumferential direction, this dimension varying in the direction of the piston axis. The communicating walls (18) also follow the thereby determined course of the edges of the two shaft wall portions (16), with these edges extending in the direction of the piston axis.

  • Patent number: 5890416
Abstract: A liquid-cooled internal combustion engine piston (10) comprises on the one hand at least one annular segment-shaped coolant duct (12a, 12b) formed within an upper piston member and having openings (16a, 16b, 18) at sites symmetrical relative to the gudgeon pin axis (14) for supplying and discharging oil. On the other hand, an approximately radial communicating duct (20) enclosed in its course toward the crank chamber and connected to the annular segmented ducts (12a, 12b) in the region of the openings (16a, 16b, 18) is provided.

  • Patent number: 5605126
Abstract: A piston for diesel engines is made of a toughness-increasing aluminium alloy containing copper, nickel, silicon, magnesium, iron and manganese. The use of this material, which can conventionally be chill-cast, and by implying special dimensions, provides a piston which, despite its relatively light construction, provides the utmost security against cracking in the stressed regions, e.g. the piston boss or the combustion chamber recess.

  • Patent number: 5381851
Abstract: A low pressure chill casting method for casting metal components such as cylinder heads or engine blocks of combustion engines or the like, which cast components have wall portions which are locally predominently thinner than in their other regions. In this method, by means of gas pressure, liquid metal is forced from a melt container through a riser tube into a mold. According to the invention, the mold is so arranged that therein the thicker wall portion of the cast component is cast upwardly remote from the gating and the thinner wall portion is cast downwardly in the vicinity of the gating, the liquid metal being introduced at or near the lower region of the mold in the vicinity of the gating into the mold cavity region forming the thinner wall portion.

  • Patent number: 5381850
Abstract: Composite casting process for making castings, consisting in particular of light metal alloys reinforced by fiber or foamed material inserts, in particular motor parts such as pistons, cylinders, cylinder heads and motor blocks of internal combustion engines. In this process, firstly, a preform reinforced by the fiber or foamed material inserts is made by embedding and the penetration of a fiber bundle or a foamed material body in molten matrix metal or by a molten matrix metal and subsequently solidifying it. Then, the preform is immersed in a molten metal bath and subsequently inserted into a casting mould for integrally casting or casting around the final casting.

  • Patent number: 5379680
Abstract: A piston for an internal combustion engine comprising a piston head provided with at least one piston ring groove and a piston body having a piston pin bore, and a compression height of less than 40% of the piston diameter. In order to be able to equalize the influences of thermal expansion as well as possible and to enable a quiet operation of the piston in a cylinder, the invention provides that the largest diameter region of the piston body is arranged in a plane which extends perpendicularly to the body-generating line and which includes the piston pin axis.

  • Patent number: 5299490
Abstract: The invention relates to a piston, particularly of light metal, for internal combustion engines, comprising a piston skirt substantially closed in the peripheral direction, pin bosses set back with respect to the piston skirt diameter in the direction of the piston axis, and two supporting skirt wall sections which thus remain on the piston skirt on the thrust and the counter-thrust side. The supporting skirt wall section on the thrust side is larger at least in the peripheral direction of the skirt than the supporting skirt wall section on the counter-thrust side.In order to divert the lateral forces acting on the supporting surfaces to the entire supporting structure in an elastically cushioned but safe manner, the two wall sections of the skirt connecting the supporting wall sections are respectively continuously curved convexly outwards as seen along the periphery of the piston skirt at least at the open skirt end beneath the pin bosses.

  • Patent number: 5095955
Abstract: To fill receptacles (2) uniformly, without air inclusions and without soiling, the filling material is pressed into the continuously enlarging space between the receptacle bottom and a counter-bottom attached to the end of the filling head (1) facing the receptacle bottom and eccentrically traversed by the outlet opening (17) and at the same time the counter-bottom is rotated relative to the receptacle by the central axis.

  • Patent number: 4787295
Abstract: Piston for internal combustion engines, with an oil scraper ring disposed in an annular groove at the circumference of its head portion. The outer edge of the annular groove adjacent to the piston skirt which adjoins the head portion is bevelled to form a chamfer. In order to ensure the maintenance of an oil film sufficient to prevent dry running of the piston, on the cylinder wall, the width of the chamfer is greater on the thrust side of the piston. The width of the chamfer may decrease essentially continuously from the counter-thrust side to the pressure side.
