Abstract: The invention concerns a method of estimating the noise power of a given digital signal (cell1) assigned a code, this signal being received by a receiver (56) simultaneously with a plurality of other digital signals assigned different codes.
The noise powers are estimated for each of the received digital signals (cell1, cell2, . . . cellM) assigned codes and there is assigned, to the given signal, the mean noise power (62) which is the ratio between, on the one hand, the sum of the estimated noise powers and, on the other hand, the total number M of received codes.
Abstract: A method and apparatus is for buffering data cells in a queuing element is presented. Each queuing element includes a partitioned buffer, where the partitioned buffer includes a plurality of partitions. Each of the partitions stores data cells received by the queuing element. Storage of the data cells into the partitions is accomplished by using an array of logical queues. Each logical queue of the array of logical queues maps data cells corresponding to that logical queue to a particular partition of the plurality of partitions. More than one logical queue may map data cells to a particular partition. Each partition may include a reserved portion, where each logical queue that maps to the partition may map a portion of its data cells to the reserved portion. The resources of the reserved portion to which a logical queue maps data cells are reserved to that specific logical queue and cannot be utilized by other logical queues.

Abstract: A decision system for a modulated electrical signal delivered by a converter in response to a received modulated optical signal compares the amplitude of the electrical signal to a reference level, measures an average amplitude of the electrical signal, and generates the reference level as a function of the result of such measurements so that the “reference level/average amplitude” ratio can be adjusted to a predetermined constant value different from 1. Applications include receivers for optical packet transmission systems.
Abstract: In source routed or hop-by-hop routed protocol communication networks, when congestion is detected at a certain network element, a notification message is sent to nodes. The nodes keep track of congestion condition and generally have knowledge of the congestion, thereby allowing them to make more intelligent routing decisions, i.e., rate controlling messages, routing traffic around congestion, regulating admission at the edge of the network. The intelligent routing decision is based on the congestion condition indicated by a restriction level which is periodically and dynamically updated.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of forming and managing itineraries or routes and to a network implementing the method. The method of forming and managing itineraries or routes consists in providing a plurality of software modules each controlling and verifying one or more means and/or resources, and having means for communicating with one or more other modules to form an itinerary by building up an ordered chain or succession of software modules allocated to said itinerary and each locked in a given state that depends on its contribution to said itinerary, and in dismantling said itinerary after it has been used by releasing said software modules allocated thereto, the various stages of existence of such an itinerary being defined by consecutive operating sequences affecting said software modules and their associated means and/or resources, and comprising successive allocation, control/verification, and release sequences.
Abstract: The invention relates to a single-mode optical fiber that, for a wavelength of 1550 nm, has an effective area greater than or equal to 60 &mgr;m2, chromatic dispersion lying in the range 3 ps/(nm.km) to 14 ps/(nm.km), a chromatic dispersion gradient in the range 0 ps/(nm2.km) to 0.1 ps/(nm2.km), and a ratio between the effective area and the chromatic dispersion gradient that is greater than or equal to 1000 &mgr;m2.nm2.km/ps, as well as a zero chromatic dispersion wavelength shorter than 1480 nm. The fiber thus has both a large effective area and a shallow chromatic dispersion gradient, and it is thus well suited to wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) transmission. The invention also relates to a WDM optical fiber transmission system that uses such a fiber as the line fiber.
Abstract: The invention relates to a dispersion shifted monomode optical fiber which, in the wavelength range 1400 nm to 1650 nm, presents both a chromatic dispersion maximum and a chromatic dispersion slope of absolute value less than 0.05 ps/nm2·km. Advantageously, the maximum in the wavelength wave 1400 nm to 1650 nm is a single maximum. The fiber also presents dispersion having a slope of absolute value less than 0.03 ps/nm2·km in the wavelength range 1530 nm to 1580 nm. The fiber of the invention is particularly suitable for wavelength division multiplexed transmission systems.
