Patents Assigned to Alcoa Global Fasteners, Inc.
  • Publication number: 20160097418
Abstract: A fastener adapted to pass through aligned holes through workpieces is disclosed. The fastener includes a pin member having a transition portion wherein the diameter of the transition portion decreases radially as it extends from the smooth cylindrical shank portion to the threaded portion. The fastener may also comprise a sleeve member and a clamping means. The clamping means includes a collar, a nut, or any other possible clamping means. In exemplary embodiments, the workpieces can be formed with a plurality of materials, the materials including composite, metallic, or composite/metallic structures, any combination thereof. In particular embodiments, the fastener has interference capability of 0.0005 to 0.0100 inches in composite structures without risk of composite delamination or damage. As a result of the fastener interference, gaps between the fastener and the structure are eliminated thereby providing good electrical conductivity between components.

  • Publication number: 20090053006
Abstract: A blind fastener for securing a plurality of workpieces is disclosed. The blind fastener comprises several components, a core bolt, a body sleeve member and a buckle sleeve member. The core bolt includes a tool engaging portion to engage the head of a driver on a installation tool. The buckle sleeve member has a buckle portion designed to create a bulb fastening the workpieces together. In some embodiments, a the buckle portion is locally annealed to promote formation of a blind side bulb. A nose assembly with a matching anti-rotation engagement to the head of the body sleeve member is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7377735
Abstract: A retaining ring for use with a fastener is disclosed. The retaining ring comprises a plurality of substantially t-shaped internal tabs that oppose one another and are about twice as thick as the exterior of the ring. The ring is installed onto a fastener having at least two longitudinally-oriented slots by locating a tab into one of the slots and snapping another tab into another slot, thereby momentarily elongating during installation. The tabs substantially reduce the possibility of accidental removal of the retaining ring. In addition, resistance and damage to the internal tabs of the retaining ring is substantially reduced when the retaining ring slides axially in the longitudinal slots of the fastener. Since only the longitudinally-oriented slots are required for installation, the axially-oriented entry slots and cross-over slots of some fastener embodiments can be eliminated, thereby significantly reducing fastener cost and manufacturing time.

  • Patent number: 7024909
Abstract: An improved machine for performing a swaging operation includes a mandrel and an expandable collet that are mounted to an actuator such as a conventional pneumatic gun. The mandrel includes a plurality of ramped planar engagement surfaces that are slidably engageable with a plurality of planar reaction surfaces on deflectable segments of the collet. The planar nature of the engagement surfaces and the reaction surfaces avoids unwanted deflection of the segments that would otherwise turn the segments into cutting tools, such as would occur if the surfaces were of certain other shapes. The mandrel is rotatably mounted to the pneumatic gun whereby the engagement surfaces are self-aligning with the reaction surfaces during an initial stage of a swaging operation.

  • Patent number: 6935209
Abstract: A fastener installation tool is provided that is used to install a threaded nut onto a threaded fastener of the type having a non-circular recess in an end of the fastener that matingly engages with a male member that has a complementary shaped non-circular tip end to the non-circular recess. The fastener installation tool generally has a head, a gear, a socket, a key, a key holder and a spring. The key has a shank with a non-circular external surface that matingly engages with a non-circular aperture in the key holder. The mating engagement between the key and the key holder provides the key with resistance to rotation and permits the use of a lower gauge spring that facilitates replacement of the key from the fastener installation tool. The key, key holder and spring are also available as a kit for retrofitting a fastener installation tool.

  • Patent number: 6840139
Abstract: An improved tool for use in association with a deformable nut of a fastener includes a socket having inner surface that forms a cavity on the socket. The inner surface includes one or more engagement surfaces that are tapered inwardly at an angle that approaches a taper of a deformable wall of the deformable nut. In one embodiment the tapering of the engagement surfaces is provided by configuring the engagement surfaces to extend in a tapered fashion generally toward a central axis of the socket. In another embodiment, the tapering is provided by configuring the engagement surfaces to each extend in a spiral fashion about a spiral axis that may, for example, be parallel and spaced-apart from the central axis of the socket.

  • Patent number: 6796385
Abstract: An improved fastener driving machine includes a driver, a support, a gear mechanism, an indexing apparatus, and a head. The head is movable among a plurality of positions with respect to the driver. The machine is advantageously structured to provide a substantially constant level of torque to a delivery point on the head independent of the position of the head with respect to the driver. The gear mechanism and the indexing apparatus are both disposed on the support, with the result that the mechanical operations of the gear mechanism are separate from the mechanical operations of the indexing apparatus. The indexing apparatus includes a number of tapered first teeth and a number of tapered second teeth that are securable to one another in a number of configurations to permit the head to be movably indexed to a number of positions with respect to the driver.
