Abstract: A household energy management system uses measurements of the household electricity supply to identify and to determine the energy consumption of individual household appliances. From these measurements, models can be built of the behavior of the occupants of the house, the thermal properties of the house and the efficiency of the appliances. Using the models, the household appliances—in particular heating and cooling appliances—can be controlled to optimize energy efficiency; and maintenance programs for the appliances and for the house itself can be recommended to the householder or arranged with a service company.

Abstract: We describe a system to provide feedback to a user of an appliance for energy saving, the system comprising: means for monitoring an energy consumption of the appliance; means for inferring a mode of use of the appliance from said power consumption; and means for providing feedback to said user responsive to said inferred mode of use to indicate how an amount of energy used by said appliance may be reduced. In some embodiments the means for monitoring power consumption comprises means for identifying one or more periods of operation of the appliance from data representing aggregate power consumption of a plurality of devices including the appliance. In embodiments the means for monitoring the power consumption comprises means for monitoring mains electricity power consumption of the plurality of devices. Alternatively the means for monitoring the power consumption may comprise, for example, a plug-through power sensing device.

Abstract: A cell phone location-based system is described that determines the occupancy of a home and controls home energy consumption such that energy is saved when the home is unoccupied. Occupancy is determined according to cell phone locations, occupant behavior patterns, or burglar alarm status. When an occupant is determined to be returning to their unoccupied home, the heating or cooling apparatus is activated to return the temperature in the home to a comfortable level by the time the occupant arrives.

Abstract: An electrical power supply consumption feedback system including a current transducer configured to be attached externally to a mains power supply cable providing a mains power supply to said building to measure a current of said mains power supply, a voltage measurement system configured to measure within said building a voltage of said mains power supply, a system controller coupled to said voltage measurement system and to said current transducer and having a system controller wireless interface, at least one of said current transducer and said voltage measurement system having a complementary wireless interface and being coupled to said system controller via the wireless interface, and wherein said system controller is configured to calculate a power consumption of said building from said measured current and voltage; and a display coupled to said system controller to display a visual indication of said calculated power consumption.
