Patents Assigned to Alex Moulton Limited
  • Patent number: 4813696
Abstract: A frame for a bicycle has a head tube for housing a steering column, a seat tube surmounted by a saddle and having at its lower end a housing for a pedal crank axle, and two beams extending between the head tube and the seat tube, said beams intersecting one another so that the two beams have X-configuration when viewed in side elevation. Each beam is made from small diameter round rod element, bent to form a `U` shaped hairpin, four of these hairpins being arranged to embrace the outsides of the head tube and the seat tube, two on each, the rod bends being rigidly attached to the tubes they embrace. These hairpins constitute the peripheral tubes of the beams of the `X`-frame as defined at the outset, there being shear webs, in the form comprising zig-zag trusses, attached between the limbs of the hairpins; while at the nodal strong point of the cruciform X-frame, the ends of the `U`-bent rod elements forming each haripin, register and are fixed in holes in a transverse tube constituting a nodal kingpin.

  • Patent number: 4729255
Abstract: In a handlebar assembly of the type comprising a tubular stem adapted to be adjustably mounted in known manner to a steering column mounted for rotation, also in known manner, in a head tube of a bicycle, and of the type wherein from the top of said stem, there branches a forward extension for mounting the handlebar; the improvement that the said forward extension comprises twin bi-furcated fork arms, each with an encircling clamp at its forward, distal, end to mount the handlebar, the arms, at their rear ends, each being pivotally secured by a rotationally adjustable serrated clamp device, to the top of the said tubular stem which is adjustably clamped in the steering column.

  • Patent number: 4576393
Abstract: A resilient suspension system for the front wheel of a bicycle includes a steering column supported on the frame of the bicycle and supports a handle bar at the upper end and a resilient suspension assembly at the opposite end. The suspension system includes a pair of main forks which are carried by a crown member mounted on the bottom of the steering column and the forks are displaced to the rear of the longitudinal centerline of the column. A subsidiary fork assembly is mounted within the steering column and extends generally along a common longitudinal axis to cooperate with the main forks to support the front wheel of the bicycle in a resilient fashion. The subsidiary forks and the main forks are interconnected by a pair of pivotal links which will permit relative movement between the main forks and the subsidiary forks in response to surface irregularities and transmit such movement to a compression assembly disposed within the steering column.

  • Patent number: 4540190
Abstract: A frame for a bicycle in which two beams, which intersect to form a cruciform, in side elevation, extend between a head tube and a seat tube. Each beam being structurally efficient in the transverse plane. The cruciform being rendered structurally efficient in the vertical plane by a tie running beneath the cruciform and extending between lower regions of the head and seat tubes. The front and rear parts of the frame are separably joined to one another at the junction of the cruciform by means of a first coupling. The tie also being separable into front and rear parts, by means of a second coupling located immediately below the first coupling.
