  • Publication number: 20100140170
Abstract: A method cleans a plurality of filters in parallel, each a filter having an inlet side and an outlet side separated by a filter barrier. In an operational phase, water is filtered using a plurality of the filters, by passing the water through the filter, from the inlet side to the outlet side. These filters may be a hollow fiber membrane. In a cleaning phase, at least one of the filters is cleaned while the other filters are filtering water in the operational phase. Each filter is cleaned by supplying sodium hypochlorite to the inlet side of the filter when the filter is off-line. The inlet side of the filter is allowed to soak in the sodium hypochlorite for at least 30 seconds without the sodium hypochlorite being pressurized through the filter barrier during the soaking process. This oxidizes organic contaminates near the surface of the filter. The filters are cycled through the cleaning phase such that each filter is repeatedly cleaned while other filters are filtering in the operational phase.

  • Patent number: 7710643
Abstract: An image projection system that communicates an image into the air includes screen material particles, a screen generation device, a delivery device and a light projecting system. The screen generation device disperses the screen material particles from the screen generation device at a targeted screen location, thereby forming a projection screen. The delivery device launches the screen generation device from a launch location to the targeted screen location in the air. • Publication number: 20070146367
Abstract: A simulation system for generating movie “scenes” that show interactions between simulated entities that populate a synthetic environment used to support training exercises and equipment. The simulation system includes a simulation engine that produces simulated entity state and event data; a visualization suite that allows an editor to display 2-D and 3-D views of the synthetic battlespace and to hear the battlefield and communications sounds associated with an interaction; a digital data logger that records simulation entity state and event data; an editing processor that provides the functionality required to identify, filter, specify, and organize the “scenes” that make up an interaction of interest; a “scene” generator that converts the entity state and event data for the set of scenes that make up an interaction into a digital movie file; and a repository for storage of complete movies and copying of movies to removable media.

  • Publication number: 20060242546
Abstract: A method and apparatus for decoding forward error correction (FEC) encoded data. A stream of units of FEC encoded bits are received, where the units are derived from a transmitted signal, where each unit represents a one-bit data value, and where each unit includes correctness bits that together reflect a level of probability that the one-bit data value represented by the unit differs from corresponding bits in the signal before it was transmitted. The stream of units of FEC encoded bits are decoded by using the quality level of bits to perform soft-decision convolution decoding on the stream of units of FEC bits, where the soft-decision convolution decoding produces, for block decoding, a stream of symbols made up of bits.

  • Patent number: 7093188
Abstract: Units of forward error correction (FEC) encoded bits each represent a one-bit data value and include correctness bits that together reflect a probability that the one-bit data value represented by the unit is correct. The units of FEC encoded bits are decoded by using the correctness bits to perform soft-decision convolution decoding on the units of FEC bits. Subsequences of units that are prone to erroneous soft-decision convolution decoding are detected by determining, whether the distribution of quality bits indicate the units are below a threshold level of correctness, and by comparing characteristics of that distribution to a given set of characteristics predetermined to be prone to result in incorrect decoding. Among the symbols produced for block decoding, symbols that correspond to units that were in detected subsequences are flagged or tagged for erasure during subsequent soft-decision block decoding.

  • Publication number: 20050004423
Abstract: A collapsible, protective containment device isolates a patient in a controlled environment. The containment device has a flexible containment wall, a closure device an air ventilation device and a plurality of ribs. The flexible containment wall is expandable from a collapsed state to define an interior region for receiving at least a portion of a patient therein and providing an impermeable barrier about the portion of the patient, for at least a selected contaminant. The closure device closes the containment wall about the patient to provide a substantially airtight interior region. The air ventilation device provides a gas comprising oxygen to the substantially airtight interior. The plurality of inflatable ribs provided along a length of the containment wall, the inflatable ribs defining one or more air compartments separate from the interior region within the containment wall, the one or more inflatable ribs supporting the containment wall away from the patient.

  • Patent number: 6838292
Abstract: Methods and devices are provided for the detection of bacterial agents such agents as Bacillus anthracis and Clostridium botulinum with high sensitivity and selectivity. More specifically, methods and devices are based on a phosphorescence-emission detection system using chelate-stabilized lanthanides (e.g, Eu(III), Tb(III), and Sm(III)) to detect various spore-specific small organic molecules (e.g., dipicolinic acid, diaminopimelic acid, n-acetlymuramic acid, and the like). By careful selection of the chelating agent or ligand coordinated to the lanthanide, both high specificity and selectivity can be obtained. Examples of suitable and preferred sensor systems include N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediaminetriacetic acid (HEDTA) and N-(2-hydroxyethyl)iminodiacetic acid (HEIDA) combined with europium (III) and/or terbium (III). The chelate-stabilized lanthanides react with the spore-specific “target” molecules to form a characteristically phosphorescent product which can then be detected.

  • Patent number: 6816008
Abstract: At least one amplifier is selected from a first bank of non-linear amplifiers. At least one amplifier is selected from a second bank of non-linear amplifiers. The number of amplifiers selected from the first and second banks remains constant. Using the selected amplifiers, first and second components of a digital symbol are amplified using the first and second banks, respectively. The outputs produced by first and second banks are combined to produce an analog representation of the digital symbol.
