Abstract: A method of concentrating a metalliferous ore containing also substantial quantities of pyrites and/or pyrrhotite and/or sphalerite and comprises subjecting an aqueous pulp of the ore to a froth flotation process in the presence of a depressant and in which (1) pyrites and/or pyrrhotite, and/or (2) sphalerite, is depressed by using as the depressant a condensation product of an aldehyde with a compound containing at least two amine or amide groups.

Abstract: Phosphate is removed from an aqueous medium by adding inorganic coagulant followed by a cationic polyelectrolyte which is a water-soluble quaternary ammonium salt of a high molecular weight copolymer of acrylamide and an alkylaminoalkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid. The process is of particular value in reducing the phosphate content of sewage effluent.

Abstract: The invention provides novel water-soluble copolymers useful as flocculating agents, especially in flocculating the red mud formed during the Bayer process for the production of alumina from bauxite. The copolymers comprise anionic monomer units e.g. acrylic acid units in a mole percentage of less than 50% and acrylamide type units some of which are methylolated.
