Patent number: 6656360Abstract: A unique filtration device (10) which removes metal ions from a contaminated aqueous stream through the use of partially hollow wicking fibers (20) impregnated with a selected liquid (18) which can capture the metal ions in the aqueous stream. The wicking fibers (20) are formed into a filter element (12) which extends from a chamber (16) through which the aqueous stream is directed into a chamber (18) wherein the unwanted metal ions are removed from the extracting liquid (18). The wicking fibers (20) include internal longitudinal cavities (22) each with a relatively small longitudinal extending opening (24). The wicking fibers (20) are filled with the selected liquid extraction (18) which remains within the fiber through capillary action by which capillary action the individual wicking fibers (20) rapidly draw the selected liquid,(18) with which they comes into contact, through the internal cavities (22).Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1997Date of Patent: December 2, 2003Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: Ronald Paul Rohrbach, Gordon William Jones, Peter Unger, Daniel Bause, Russell Dondero, Lixin Xue

Publication number: 20030200861Abstract: An armor system useful, for example, as a shroud, comprising a first pliable, cut resistant fibrous layer and a second pliable fibrous layer is disclosed. The first layer is arranged to receive an impact from a large projectile prior to the second layer and engages the projectile to slow its velocity. The second layer is substantially coextensive with the first and dissipates the incoming energy of the impact to resist complete penetration of the second layer by the projectile, preferably by deforming in response to the impact. Both layers comprise fibers having a tensile modulus of at least about 200 g/d, and an energy-to-break of at least about 8 J/g and a tenacity equal to or greater than about 10 g/d. In another embodiment, the layers are reversed relative to the impact face of the system so that the second layer becomes the first layer and is resistant to projectiles impacting the system, while the first layer becomes the second layer and resists deformation of the system by projectile impacts.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 18, 2001Publication date: October 30, 2003Applicant: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: David Solares Cordova, Kevin Mark Kirkland

Patent number: 6613257Abstract: A process for making load limiting yarn comprising making block copolymer and then spinning the block copolymer into yarn. The process employs a twin screw extruder and comprises (A) forwarding aromatic polyester melt to an injection position in a twin screw extruder, (B) injecting lactone monomer into the molten aromatic polyester, (C) dispersing the monomer into the aromatic polyester melt so that a uniform mixture forms in less than about thirty seconds, and (D) reacting the uniform mixture resulting from step (C) at a temperature from about 250° C. to from a block copolymer. Steps (A) through (D) occur in less than about four minutes residence time in the twin screw extruder. The process is advantageous because high IV starting aromatic polyester can be used and the short reaction time at high temperature results in block copolymer with minimum transesterification, a high melting point, and a high melt viscosity.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2000Date of Patent: September 2, 2003Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: Weiming Tang, Frank Mares, Robert Clark Morgan

Patent number: 6609650Abstract: A process is disclosed for brazing plate/plate and plate/fin multi-channeled structures using an amorphous brazing foil as a brazing filler metal between the parts in order to form uniform joints having optimal dimensions, shape and strength. The parts are assembled in an unconstrained stack, and a controlled load is applied to the top of the stack. The stack is then heated to a temperature at which the interlayer melts and reacts with the base metal to form the joints. The stack is cooled resulting in a brazed structure having the desired characteristics, wherein the brazed joints are optimally formed and the strength of the structure is equal to the underlying strength of the base metal.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2002Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: Anatol Rabinkin, Nicholas DeCristofaro
