  • Patent number: 7185778
Abstract: Barrier units and articles made therefrom, particularly constraining bands of high strength and low weight for containing articles, especially in blast resistant container assemblies, are disclosed. The barrier unit comprises a surface having a regular polygonal perimeter with a plurality of substantially parallel sides, each of which terminates in at least one loop integral with the surface. The surface comprises at least one network of high strength fiber with at least about 50 weight percent of the fiber comprising substantially contianuous lengths of fiber aligned in the hoop direction of the loops. The barrier units have utility as constraining bands for loads of articles like logs, and as doors/closures for access openings to the interior of aircraft blast resistant cargo containers. They are also useful as fences and window protectors.

  • Patent number: 6735953
Abstract: An environmental control system includes a turbomachine and an air cycle machine that is driven by shaft power of the turbomachine. The turbomachine includes a compressor, which supplies compressed bleed air to the air cycle machine. Ambient air is compressed by the compressor, and heat of compression is removed by an air-to-air heat exchanger, which envelops the turbomachine. The cooled, compressed air is expanded in the air cycle machine to produce a stream of cooled, conditioned air. Ambient air used by the air-to-air heat exchanger to cool the compressed bleed air is drawn into the turbomachine's exhaust by an eductor.

  • Patent number: 6397353
Abstract: A system for testing a hardware unit containing sensitive information, while inhibiting access to that information, includes a secure program in an Automated Test Station and an interface circuit. The test station has a programmed processor, as well as generating equipment which generates pseudo test signals and measuring devices which measure the response of the unit to actual test signals. Within the processor of the test station there is a test program which does not indicate the sensitive information and a run-time program that interprets the test-program to generate encoded commands for carrying out the test. The interface circuit receives the encoded commands and the pseudo test signals from the test station, decodes the encoded commands and generates the actual test signals. These actual test signals are routed to the unit under test by the interface circuit.

  • Patent number: 6296821
Abstract: An ultra-efficient multilobal cross-sectioned fiber filter for chemical contaminant filtering applications is described. An absorptive chemically reactive reagent, preferably an acid or base and in liquid or an adsorptive chemically reactive reagent (an acid or base) in solid form, is disposed within longitudinal slots in each length of fiber. The reagent may be used alone or in conjunction with solid adsorptive particles which may also be utilized with the reagents in the longitudinal slots within the fibers. Reagents within the fibers remain exposed to a base-contaminated airstream passing through the filter. Base contaminants in the airstream, chemicals such as ammonium and amines (as well as particles), react with the acid reagent within the longitudinal slots of the fibers. As the contaminant and reagent react, the ammonium or amine becomes irreversibly absorbed (or adsorbed if reagent is a solid acid) to the liquid acid reagent and multilobal fiber.

  • Patent number: 6292721
Abstract: In order to provide the pilots with a display or a map of the terrain below the aircraft, a display is generated on a cockpit display, such as a weather radar, of the contours of the terrain below the aircraft. The terrain contour display is generated from aircraft position information, a terrain data base, and a terrain awareness envelope defined by awareness boundaries. Terrain contours are depicted with the highest terrain within the envelope colored red, high intermediate terrain contours in yellow with varying dot densities, low intermediate terrain contours in green with varying dot densities, and the lowest terrain in black. The green contours can be overwritten with a low density yellow based on a pre-caution envelope which extends certain of the awareness boundaries to provide notice to a pilot of upcoming cautions.

  • Patent number: 6233915
Abstract: An injection tube for connecting a plenum to a combustion chamber includes a first mouth having a longitudinal axis and adapted for insertion into a cold plenum port or other component and a second mouth having a longitudinal axis and adapted for insertion into a hot chamber port or other component. To accommodate flexural, axial and torsional forces caused by differential thermal expansion between the two components, the mouths of the tube are configured to have multiple degrees of freedom within each corresponding port while maintaining port-mouth seal integrity. In an illustrative embodiment, the first mouth outer surface shape allows free slip of the first mouth parallel to the first mouth longitudinal axis, as well as rotation of the first mouth about both the first mouth longitudinal axis and a first mouth outer surface transverse axis. Mounted on the outer surface of the tube is a rocker arm adapted to engage a pivot mounted on the chamber outer surface or to engage the chamber outer surface itself.

  • Patent number: 6188375
Abstract: An AMEL display is formed and operated in a manner to provide enhanced gray scale or color operation. The AMEL display is operated over consecutive illumination frames which are partitioned into a plurality of passes. The desired illumination intensity for a given pixel during each illumination frame is determined and the pixel is activated for a substantially equal duration in each pass to provide the desired illumination level for each frame. Each pass has an associated illumination profile signal composed of a plurality of discrete steps for selectively passing a number of illumination pulses to each active EL cell in the display in accordance with a pixel activation voltage loaded into each active EL cell. The pixel activation voltage and illumination profiles cooperate to distribute the number of illumination pulses in a substantially equal fashion in each pass of an illumination frame. Pixel driver circuits are disclosed for operating the pixel in accordance with the disclosed illumination methods.
