  • Patent number: 6527514
Abstract: A blade for a gas turbine includes a tip cap and a tip squealer and passages for cooling fluid extending from a hollow space to the tip squealer. The tip squealer includes a cavity extending from the tip pocket into the tip squealer such that the cooling passage is divided into first and second portions with an exit hole in the cavity and an exit hole on the tip crown, respectively. In case of a blockage of the exit hole on the tip crown, cooling fluid can flow through the additional exit hole into the tip pocket and cool the squealer.

  • Patent number: 6519170
Abstract: In a method for operating a matrix converter (10) in which m phases (G1, . . . ,G6) of a source (11) delivering an alternating voltage are alternatingly connected with n phases (L1, . . . ,L3) of a load (12) via a multiple number of controllable bi-directional switches (14) arranged in an (m×n) matrix, an increased performance at decreased expenditure becomes possible in that switching over from a first phase (G1) of the source (11) to a second phase (G1) of the source (11) only takes place if the condition Ik·(Vk−Vl)·Kijkl<0 is met, where Ik and Vk are the current and the voltage of the first phase (G1), Vl is the voltage of the second phase (G1) and in each instance Kijkl is a characteristic constant for the mutual inductance between the phases (G1, . . . ,G6) of the source (11) and the inductance of the load (12).

  • Patent number: 6516871
Abstract: The thermal performance of the heat transfer element assemblies for rotary regenerative air preheaters is enhanced to provide a desired level of heat transfer and pressure drop with a reduced weight. The heat transfer plates in the assemblies have spaced apart dimples for maintaining plate spacing and oblique undulations with the undulations on adjacent plates preferably extending at opposite oblique angles. The dimples may be on every other plate and alternate between the two sides of the plates or they may be on every plate and all extend to the same side.

  • Patent number: 6514041
Abstract: A thermal turbo machine is provided for the attachment of guide vanes on its stationary housing with guide vane carriers with a guide vane platform, from which braces extend towards a band that is suspended in a recess in the stationary housing. In particular, part of the axially adjoining heat shield segments form part of the guide vane platform, and the braces are arranged in a V shape. The braces and the guide vane platform furthermore include a first material, and the band of a second material, whereby the first material has a higher coefficient of expansion than the second material. The guide vane carrier according to the invention has the advantage that the radial blade clearance for the guide vanes and at the same time the radial blade clearance for the rotating blades is minimized for different operating conditions of the turbo machine.

  • Patent number: 6510693
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing hot working gases for a gas turbine system. In a burner, combustion that generates hot combustion waste gas takes place. A portion of the combustion waste gas branches off and feeds into an oxygen separation device. A heat exchanger produces a heated oxygen-containing gas from oxygen-containing gas. The heated oxygen-containing gas feeds to the oxygen separation device. The oxygen separation device includes an oxygen separation means that removes oxygen from the heated oxygen-containing gas and feeds it to the branched-off waste gas. Oxygen-reduced hot gas then leaves the oxygen separation device. Oxygen-enriched branched-off waste gas as well as fuel feed to the burner and form a combustion mixture that bums in the burner while forming the hot combustion waste gases. In order to improve the efficiency of the device, the oxygen-enriched branched-off waste gas heats the oxygen-containing gas.

  • Patent number: 6505567
Abstract: A circulating fluidized bed steam generator 10 and a method for operating the circulating fluidized bed steam generator are provided which offer the flexibility to use carbon dioxide (CO2) both as a desirable end product and as support to the combustion process. The method includes the step of introducing a substantially pure oxygen feed stream into the circulating fluidized bed steam generator 10 and the step of combusting a fuel in the presence of the substantially pure oxygen feed stream to produce a flue gas having carbon dioxide and water vapor as its two largest constituent elements by volume. The method also includes the step of passing the flue gas through an oxygen feed stream pre-heater 144 at which heat from the flue gas is transferred to the oxygen feed stream. Furthermore, the method includes the step of separating the flue gas into an end product portion and a recycling portion.

  • Patent number: 6499300
Abstract: A power plant and a method for operating a power plant with a CO2 process is shown. The power plant includes a compressor, a turbine, a generator, a recuperator, and a burner unit with an oxygen separation device and a burner. Oxygen-containing gas, CO2 medium from the CO2 process, and fuel are supplied to the burner unit. The oxygen separation device removes oxygen from the oxygen-containing gas and adds it to the CO2 medium. To improve the efficiency of the burner unit, the burner unit is provided with an additional burner. A portion of the oxygen-enriched CO2 medium as well as fuel is fed to the additional burner. Hot CO2 medium formed by the combustion in the additional burner is mixed with the heated CO2 medium at the input of the oxygen separation device.

  • Patent number: 6491482
Abstract: A milling method is provided in which a finished part of any desired contour is milled from a blank of any desired contour by the milling tool being guided on a continuous, spiral guide path from the blank continuously to the finished part. In this case, material is continuously removed during the milling operation without ever lifting the tool or clamping the workpiece in place again. This results in a reduced machining time of the workpiece. The continuous, spiral guide path permits a harmonic change of form from the blank to the finished part with smooth guidance of the tool. The method can also be carried out with ceramic tools.
