  • Patent number: 6062634
Abstract: Automotive front end structure adapted to be mounted on an automotive vehicle frame to absorb impact energy. The structure includes first and second crush hoops each having a central portion and side portions extending rearwardly from the central portion. The rear ends of the side portions of each hoop are connected to brackets and then to first and second crush boxes. Brackets connect the crush boxes to the vehicle frame. The crush hoops and the crush boxes are adapted to crush and collapse to absorb energy in a frontal impact. The central portion of the first crush hoop projects forwardly a greater distance than the central portion of the second crush hoop so that the first crush hoop is first to deform in a front impact. Thereafter, the other hoop begins to load and dissipate energy to provide a smooth, continuous and progressive reaction force to front end deformation.

  • Patent number: 6056349
Abstract: A vehicle door has a door body which includes an outer door panel, an inner door panel, and a recess disposed therebetween. A metal mat has a plurality of elongated first elements and a plurality of second elements interwoven with respect to the first elements. The metal mat is secured directly or indirectly to the door body. The first elements are movable with respect to the second elements such that the application of an impact force thereto will result in relative sliding movement caused either by displacement of the first elements or second elements, or stretching of the same under the influence of the impact force, or both. In a preferred embodiment, peripheral portions of the woven mat are fixedly secured to a frame which is in turn secured to the door body. The first elements are preferably offset from the second elements about 50 to 100 degrees. In one embodiment a plurality of third elements oriented generally in the same direction as the second elements are interwoven with the first elements.

  • Patent number: 6045631
Abstract: A method of making a light metal-rare earth metal alloy includes mixing a light metal powder, such as aluminum powder, with a finely divided rare earth metal-containing compound, such as scandium oxide, creating a billet by subjecting the mixture to cold isostatic compaction. The billet formed from the mixture of aluminum powder and rare earth metal-containing compound is preferably sintered at a temperature of about 600.degree. C. to 800.degree. C. and preferably about 640.degree. C. to 680.degree. C., and subsequently feeding the billet to a molten aluminum bath. • Patent number: 6020030
Abstract: An aluminum alloy substrate is pretreated with an aqueous solution containing an organophosphorus compound, preferably a vinyiphosphonic acid-acrylic acid copolymer, before coating the substrate with a polymer. Passing the substrate through the solution contaminates it with aluminum and other elements. The pretreatment solution is rejuvenated by removing aluminum with a cation exchange resin that preferably contains a styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer functionalized with sulfonate groups. Rinsing the substrate contaminates the rinse water with the copolymer. The rinse water is concentrated by reverse osmosis or membrane ultrafiltration and returned to the pretreatment solution.

Abstract: A vehicle greenhouse support assembly has an elongated substantially rigid beam, a deformable sheet covering at least a portion of the beam adapted to face the interior of the vehicle with the deformable sheet having a plurality of protrusions. An overlying trim element covers at least a portion of the deformable sheet. The protrusions preferably cover about 30 to 60 percent of the sheet and the sheet is preferably an aluminum sheet having a thickness of about 0.01 inch to 0.02 inch. Impact between the support assembly and a passenger will cause deformation and/or tearing of the deformable sheet and absorption of at least a portion of the energy impact, thereby minimizing the likelihood of a vehicle occupant suffering a serious injury. An associated method is provided.

  • Patent number: 6001245
Abstract: A process for separating oil from a lubricant composition containing solid particles. The contaminated lubricant composition is mixed with liquid or supercritical CO.sub.2 before the lubricant composition and CO.sub.2 mixture is filtered through a filter medium.
